Jim Parsons stepped out at the 2024 CFDA Fashion Awards looking completely unrecognizable on Oct. 28. The 51-year-old was sporting a brand new thick beard that drastically changed his appearance while attending the awards show at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.
“I grew it knowing that I was going to go into the play,” Parsons told Entertainment Tonight of growing his beard ahead of his Broadway role in Our Town alongside Katie Holmes and Zoey Deutch. “The play didn’t need it. Long story short, I had a talk with my barber. I was like, ‘You always have a beard,’ and he was like, ‘Well, I kind of have a weak chin.’”
Realizing “it can change the shape of your face,” The Big Bang Theory star noted, “I was like, ‘I want to try it.’”
Parsons is in the middle of his limited engagement run as the lead character of the Stage Manager in the Broadway revival production of Our Town, marking his third stage show since the COVID pandemic.
“I’ve always loved doing theater, but I am positive that that whole pandemic stuff had a lot to do with how much I enjoy being in a rehearsal room,” Parsons explained to Stephen Colbert on The Late Show in September. “That kind of contact after having so little of it for a while and in a world where it’s so easy to just Zoom or type and you don’t really have to see anyone.”
The Emmy winner also opened up about the lessons he’s learned from taking on the iconic role in Our Town.
“You’re not going to appreciate every moment,” Parsons told Colbert. “We’re egoic human beings on this earth. If you can get a few of them, that’s a really great win. So forgive yourself for going, ‘I just didn’t really see so and so today.’ Well, try again next time.”
