The bass at the 2005 Grammys kept runnin', runnin'.
After all, Fergie and the Black Eyed Peas kicked off music's biggest night 20 years ago with the smash hit "Let’s Get It Started," which was seamlessly blended into a musical medley of early aughts singles featuring Gwen Stefani—then in her Harajuku Girl era—and Eve, as well as Maroon 5, Franz Ferdinand and Los Lonely Boys.
A bevy of stars—including Bono, Tim McGraw and Norah Jones—also came together for a tribute to victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, performing a cover of The Beatles' "Across the Universe" that defied all music genres.
Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez hit the stage with her then-husband of eight months Marc Anthony for an emotional rendition of their duet "Escapemono."
But the singers—who finalized their divorce in 2014 after two kids and 10 years of marriage—weren't they only couple who stole the show at the time.
Gwen brought along her then-husband Gavin Rossdale, while Lisa Marie Presley walked the red carpet with Michael Lockwood—who she married the following year but divorced in 2016 after giving birth to their twin daughters. (Lisa Marie died in 2024 at age 54.)
As for winners that night, the Adam Levine and Maroon 5 cemented themselves in the industry with their Best New Artist prize.
At the same time, John Mayer picked up a Song of the Year win for "Daughters," while Alicia Keys walked away with three trophies in the Best R&B Album, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals categories.
And in terms of the crowd, the guest list was stacked with A-list stars, including Beyoncé, Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz.
