Moeka Hoshi is a crybaby.

At least, that’s how she referred to herself while accepting the 2025 Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series during the Feb. 7 awards ceremony hosted by Chelsea Handler.

After hearing her name announced as the winner, the Shogun star—who was nominated alongside Allison Janney, Nicole Kidman, Skye P. Marshall, Anna Sawai and Fiona Shaw—strode onto stage in a floor-length red dress and matching cape with tears already flowing down her face.

“Thank you so much. Oh, my gosh, I’m crying,” Moeka began her speech. “I’m crying too much, sorry. I’m a crybaby.”

But the audience didn’t think she was overly emotional. In fact, they began cheering louder as she went into the rest of her speech where she introduced herself to her fellow attendees and said, “I came from Japan, nice to meet you.”

“Thank you to Critics Choice, and thank you to Shogun,” she continued. “Each and every one of the cast and crew, I'm standing here on your behalf. I love you guys. Thank you so much.”

Beyond her gratitude for her castmates and being recognized for her role as Usami Fuji in the Hulu drama series, the Chiba, Japan, native took time to address the Los Angeles community recovering from the recent Los Angeles wildfires.

“There is something that I want to say,” she said. “I was so shocked to see how much this beautiful city has changed because of the fire. My heart goes out to those who have lost their homes and loved ones, but please remember that you are not alone.”

She added, “Even from Japan, I always think of you and remember you. My thoughts are always with you. Thank you so much.”

The audience certainly connected with Moeka’s sentiments, erupting in applause as she ended her speech.

But before leaving the stage, the award winner humbly petitioned the crowd, quipping, “I hope my English all made sense.”
