Live from New York, it’s a too-real joke.
SNL 50: The Anniversary Special is here and during a segment that saw alums Tina Fey and Amy Poehler field questions from the celebrity-filled audience, Ryan Reynolds made a nod to his and wife Blake Lively’s ongoing legal battle with Justin Baldoni.
When asked how’s it going, Ryan answers, “Great,” before pausing a beat, adding, “Why? What have you heard?”
Amy and Tina immediately replied with a litany of “no, nothing,” while flashing Ryan a thumbs up.
Blake—who was seated at her husband’s side—whipped her head towards Ryan after the joke, keeping her face pointedly blank before smiling as the Deadpool star continued with his question.
The moment seemed to be a clear reference to the drama that has unfolded between the couple and Justin, who starred in and directed It Ends With Us, as well as Wayfarer Studios in the months since the film premiered.
But the drama with Justin isn’t the only real-life content Saturday Night Live has chosen to make light of. During the episode’s opening monologue, comedians Steve Martin and John Mulaney took a moment to shed light on the many celebrities who have stepped into the role of host over the years—the good, the bad and the ugly.
"Over the course of 50 years, 894 people have hosted Saturday Night Live, and it amazes me that only two of them have committed murder," John said during show’s opening, alluding to the murder trial of O.J. Simpson, who hosted the show in 1978, as well as frequent host Alec Baldwin, whose manslaughter charges for the fatal Rust shooting were dropped last year.
John then continued, sending a dig towards Steve, “Each week, a new celebrity host comes in with their own dynamic, and they throw everything off. But not you, Steve, because you have no dynamic."
Similarly, during the Weekend Update segment, co-anchor Colin Jost alluded to the legal trouble of Sean “Diddy” Combs.
While joking about how many celebrities were in attendance, so much so that the audience overflowed into a nearby studio in 30 Rock, Colin added that one was watching, “From the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.”
And while the audience laughed as a picture of the rapper appeared on screen, Colin added, “Oh you went to the parties!”
