Watch: Oscars 2025: Why Adam Sandler Stormed Out After Hilarious Surprise Cameo

When Adam Sandler shows up at the Oscars, just go with it.

The actor made a surprise appearance at the 97th Academy Awards March 2 clad in a bright blue hooded sweatshirt and navy blue basketball shorts, which was called out by host Conan O’Brien during his opening monologue for falling short of the evening’s black tie dress code.

“Nobody even thought about what I was wearing ‘til you brought it up,” Adam exclaimed from his seat at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, to which Conan replied, “You're dressed like a guy playing video poker at 2 a.m.”

The 50 First Dates star carried on with the bit by doubling down on his laidback attire.

“You know what? I like the way I look ‘cause I'm a good person,” he continued. “I don't care about what I wear or what I don't wear. My snazzy gym shorts and fluffy sweatshirt offend you so much that you had to mock me in front of my peers?”

While the former late night host offered an apology for the dig, Adam proceeded to make his way out of the auditorium, despite protests from the crowd.

“It's not you, it's him,” he explained, pointing at Conan onstage. “He's the one who caused this.”

But before exiting the venue, Adam invited the attendees to participate in a game of basketball after the ceremony—with a tip-off led by “the guy from [Nosferatu]”—and gave his Men, Women and Children costar Timothée Chalamet a hug while planting a kiss on his head.

Speaking of Timothée, it was a big night for the actor as his performance in A Complete Unknown earned him a nod for Best Actor at the event. And on the red carpet, his costar Elle Fanning reflected on her fond memories of working with him on the film.

“Between scenes, we would just be ourselves and be silly off-camera,” she told Zuri Hall during Live From E!: The Oscars, “but I think everyone was so focused on this one, with this film, about really making sure we got it completely right. So there wasn’t much breaking in the scenes.”
