June Squibb won’t be riding a motorized scooter into retirement anytime soon.
In fact, at 95 years old, June’s onscreen career is only reaching new heights, with her first starring role occurring in 2024’s Thelma and her next as the eponymous protagonist in Scarlett Johansson’s Eleanor the Great hitting theaters Sept. 26.
If she were to retire, as June put it to E! News’ Francesca Amiker at Eleanor’s North American premiere at TIFF Sept. 8, “What would I do? I think people would be crazy with me if I wasn’t working.”
So, instead of hanging up her hat, June is setting her sights on another professional milestone: Starting in December, the Nebraska actress will star as Marjorie Prime in Marjorie Prime on Broadway.
“I had a long career in the theater before I ever started doing film,” she explained. “I was in my 60s when I started film.”
She continued, “So it's like going back home in a way, you know. And it's a great script I'm doing, and a short time period of time.”
But before work gets underway for that project, June is basking in seeing her hard work on Eleanor the Great—which is Scarlett’s feature directorial debut—come to fruition.
“I had a lot of fun,” June gushed. “I love the actors I was working with, and Scarlett was so great. She was such a leader. She made everything so smooth and easy.”
And for Scarlett, her time making the movie—which follows Eleanor as she moves to New York City at age 90, where she strikes up a friendship with a 19-year-old student—was equally memorable.
“I have so many wonderful memories of being on set,” the Avengers alum. “The film is very moving. There's a lot of very deep, deep dramatic work that the actors are doing. And in between all of that, you have to laugh because otherwise you cry. So we were just like in hysterics all the time.”
Scarlett continued, “So just being with my friends and making this movie, every day was wonderful.”
