Watch: Why Emma Heming Willis Says Bruce Willis' Living Arrangement "Isn't Up for Debate"

Emma Heming Willis is doing the very best she can.

Weeks after Bruce Willis’ wife of 16 years shared that the Die Hard star is living separately from her and their daughters Mabel Willis, 13, and Evelyn Willis, 11, she maintained that it was the best possible choice for their family as Bruce, 70, lives with frontotemporal dementia.

It was a hard decision for us but that was the safest and best decision, not just for Bruce but also for our two young girls,” Emma explained during a Sept. 9 appearance on Good Morning America. “It’s really not up for a debate.”

The 47-year-old shared insight into her family’s living situation in order to peel back the curtain on the inner lives of caregivers, but she knew it would spark controversy.

“I’m not going to take a vote on that,” she maintained. “Now I know that Bruce has the best care, 100 percent of the time. His needs are met 100 percent of the time.”

Indeed, the The Unexpected Journey author hoped that her honesty in caring for Bruce—also dad to Rumer Willis, 37, Scout Willis, 34 and Tallulah Willis, 31, with ex Demi Moore—would make caregivers in the world, particularly those caring for loved ones with FTD, feel seen.

“Caregivers are so judged,” she explained. “It just goes to show that people sometimes have an opinion versus really having the experience. You have to do what is right for your family and what is going to keep your loved ones safe as well as your young children.”

After Bruce was diagnosed in late 2022—his family publicly shared his diagnosis the following February—Emma felt completely alone in terms of where to begin caring for him, which is why she decided to write her memoir, which hits shelves today, Sept. 9.

“When we received Bruce’s diagnosis, we left that appointment with no hope, no road map,” she recalled. “It was nothing. To leave with no support, no guidance. It’s not just happening to me, it’s happening to so many. Over the years I’ve been able to put these incredible experts and specialists around our family and that is how The Unexpected Journey was born.”
