Sarah Jessica Parker can’t help but wonder what the end of And Just Like That means.
However, despite being hard to do, she’s certain it was time to officially say goodbye to the Sex and the City revival and end Carrie Bradshaw’s story.
“It was a very tough decision,” Sarah Jessica—who played Carrie during both series—said in an Oct. 2 interview on CBS Mornings. “I’m not sure what that decision means 'cause I could just be on hiatus. But it was a difficult decision.”
Indeed, it wasn’t just hard for her, but admittedly for writer and director Michael Patrick King, who stunned viewers when he announced that season three would bring And Just Like That to a close mid-season.
“I think Michael thought a lot about it,” she said. “And I think it’s out of respect for this singular professional experience that you have to consider what you want to do and have you done it. And sometimes it’s best to gracefully walk away when things feel really right and energetic. Instead of squeezing and exploiting people’s generosity and hospitality.”
Fans said one final goodbye to Carrie, Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) during the Aug. 14 series finale. And while the news left fans in shock, and with a lot of questions about the three characters brought to life in 1998, Michael was happy putting a period at the end of their stories.
"I really do want people to understand that this was about telling these stories and bringing them to a place where there was a finish,” Michael told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview in August. “And by ‘finish,’ I mean an open-ended finish, where each of the characters’ lives could continue and you could feel good about it for all of them. It’s what you want to write now that we’re done. We’re done writing.”
As for the beloved Carrie, Michael assured fans that though she ended up without the man of her dreams, she was happy with the love she found in herself.
“Who Carrie was at the end of Sex and the City and who she is at the end of And Just Like That is someone who has had great growth, great life experience,” Michael explained. “Now she’s ready to say the very shocking sentence, ‘Maybe just me,’ which she says to Charlotte in that beautiful scene where Sarah Jessica was just so emotional about saying that.”
And most importantly, Sarah Jessica got the ending that she desired.
“Leave a party while it’s still fun, right?” Michael said. “You can hear it in her Instagram… that tone in her voice is such a goodbye. It’s so beautiful.”

Series creator Michael Patrick King revealed the Sex And The City spin-off starring Sarah Jessica Parker will end after the current third season in a two-part finale.
“And just like that…the ongoing storytelling of the Sex and the City universe is coming to an end,” Michael said in an Aug 1 Instagram post. “While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That…season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop.”
“SJP and I held off announcing the news until now because we didn’t want the word ‘final’ to overshadow the fun of watching the season,” he added. “It’s with great gratitude we thank all the viewers who have let these characters into their homes and their hearts over these many years.”
