Keanu Reeves almost sent his identity to the matrix.
Indeed, the Matrix alum shared that he briefly changed his real name during the early days of his acting career—but ultimately, he couldn’t fully commit to taking the blue pill.
“I was a professional actor around 16, 17,” Keanu, 61, explained in the Oct. 15 episode of the New Heights podcast. “I ended up doing a movie in Toronto that got me an agent in L.A. So, at 20 years old, I drove in my car to Los Angeles, got out of my car, and my manager said, ‘We want to change your name.’”
The John Wick star was confused by his manager’s suggestion at the time, especially since they didn’t have a new moniker prepared for him. So, Keanu began to brainstorm his new stage name.
“I remember I was walking on the beach and I was like, ‘My name? What if I change my name?’” he reflected on his thought process. “My middle name is Charles, so I was like ‘Chuck?’ And I grew up on a street called Spadina, [so I thought] ‘Chuck Spadina?’ Then I was like, ‘something Templeton.’ But then I became ‘KC Reeves.’”
Jokingly cringing at the pseudonym, Keanu only used ‘KC Reeves’ in his first film before deciding to ditch it.
“And then I couldn’t do it,” he noted. “So then I would be in auditions and they would go, ‘KC Reeves.’ And I wouldn’t even answer. Six months later, I was like, ‘I’m not doing this.’ That’s a Hollywood moment.”
Though the Constantine actor has stayed committed to his birth moniker, he hasn’t yet given his last name to longtime girlfriend Alexandra Grant. Indeed, the duo—who started dating in 2018—sparked marriage rumors in September, and the film director denied the speculation by posting a lighthearted photo of them kissing on Instagram.
“This is a real photo,” Alexandra, 52, wrote that same month. “Not an engagement photo or an AI wedding announcement... simply a kiss!”
And Keanu appreciated his girlfriend’s non-subtle approach.
“Well, that wasn’t the first time,” the Dogstar bassist told E! News at the Oct. 13 premiere of his new film Good Fortune in New York. “We’ve been going out for a long time. The wedding, it’s a nice thing. People did a lot of nice messages and stuff, but Alexandra just did a wonderful [job] addressing. Like, ‘Thank you, but here’s the reality.’”
