This story contains spoilers from season five of Only Murders in the Building.
The door has finally shut on the mystery of who killed Lester the Doorman.
Only Murders in the Building’s season five came to a shocking conclusion Oct. 27, as Mayor Beau Tillman (Keegan-Michael Key) was revealed to have killed Lester (Teddy Coluca), the Arconia doorman who was found dead in the first episode.
Mabel (Selena Gomez) Oliver (Martin Short) and Charles (Steve Martin) uncovered the confusing chain of events that left Lester dead in the fountain. First, Nicky (Bobby Cannavale) caught Beau having an affair with his wife Sofia (Téa Leoni), prompting the mobster to cut off his finger as revenge, which led to the discovery of the mysterious digit left in Oliver’s apartment last season.
Meanwhile, episode nine already revealed that in an attempt to protect the Arconia from being overrun with mobsters, Lester killed Nicky. However, in doing so, Lester became a target of Beau, as he not only wanted his finger back, but also wanted to prevent the casino plans of the “new mob” trio of Camila White (Renée Zellweger), Sebastian “Bash” Steed (Christoph Waltz) and Jay Pflug (Logan Lerman) from coming to light.
In the end, Beau shoved Lester into a fountain, causing him to fatally hit his head. And while the doorman attempted to let Mabel, Oliver and Charles know who had done it, his phone’s autocorrect prevented the message from coming across.
Upon this discovery, Beau attempted to keep the gang from revealing his secrets by locking them in a secret room ahead of a scheduled demolition for the Arconia. However, they ultimately were able to escape and get the news out there, leading to his arrest and, temporarily, saving the building from being destroyed.
But, as with every Arconia mystery, all’s well ends with murder. At the end of the episode, Mabel, Oliver and Charles took a break from all the chaos by revisiting Cinda Canning’s crime podcast from the very first season, eagerly following along with a story of a red-haired woman from the U.K. who was wrongfully accused of killing a royal heir.
In the end, the woman Cinda (Tina Fey) described was actually herself, and she was seen stumbling through the streets with bloodied hands. Ultimately, the famed podcaster was found dead not only in the United States, but right outside the Arconia—ensuring Mabel, Oliver and Charles could investigate her death.
While Only Murders in the Building has not yet been officially renewed for season six, the events finale—and the Arconia’s rocky fate—are leaving fans wondering if they’ll see the new mystery solved and whether it will bring the gang across the pond.
As for whether the cast is in for another round? “As long as we feel that the quality is what it is presently,” Short told E! News in September, “I think we’ll always wanna do it.”
