La La Anthony sees a slam dunk win in her son’s future.
And recently, Kiyan Anthony secured his first victory. The BMF alum watched her 18-year-old—whom she shares with ex-husband Carmelo Anthony—make his college basketball debut for Syracuse Orange Nov. 4, scoring 15 points in his team's win over the Binghamton Bearcats.
In her Nov. 5 Instagram post, La La, 43, shared several highlights from the game. She first showed off her son practicing on the court before he later made a three-pointer shot in the first quarter. And true to this special occasion, The Chi actor (born Alani Nicole Vázquez) wasn’t the only person that supported Kiyan from the sidelines. In fact, her mom Carmen Surillo also attended the game, and the two reunited with him for a group photo.
Shouting out Kiyan’s jersey number, she captioned the post, “#7.”
Although Carmelo—who retired from the NBA in May 2023 after playing 19 seasons—didn’t physically attend his son’s game, he showed love to Kiyan on his Instagram Stories. Resharing a video of the teen scoring multiple shots, he wrote, “See you champ!!!”
And according to Kiyan, his dad also called him before the game to hype him up. (After all, Carmelo attended and played for Syracuse during the 2002-2003 season, helping the team win their first NCAA tournament before he started his legendary NBA career.)
“He definitely watched it,” Kiyan said in a post-game interview. “He was definitely watching through the screen.’’
As for La La, she’s not only proud to see her son dribbling towards his dreams. She’s also excited that he’s created a name for himself on social media.
“Since I do know it, I’m able to kind of talk him through it, make sure he understands,” the former MTV VJ told People last March. “He’s so calm and humble and just a really great kid.”
And true to her experience in Hollywood, La La gave him some helpful advice to have a long, successful career outside of basketball.
“Don’t listen to negative comments,” she continued. “Just do what makes you happy. Just quiet the outside noise. I always tell him, ‘Quiet the outside noise. It’s not important.’”
