It was a sweet victory for Jasmine.
After all, the medical student was crowed the winner of season 16 of the Great British Baking Show’s finale on Nov. 7.
The final leg of the Channel 4 competition, released as part of collection 13 on Netflix Nov. 7, saw Jasmine and fellow finalists Tom and Aaron facing off in the Signature (classic British iced finger buns), Technical (French Delights) and Showstopper (largest cake in Great British Baking Show history) challenges.
Jasmine’s win didn’t come without a few hiccups as judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith deemed her buns as being “too flat.” However, she redeemed herself with her showstopping cardamom sponge with raspberry, almond, lemon mascarpone, and vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream cake.
And while her competition with Aaron and Tom was close, in the end the 23-year-old came out victorious.
“Oh my goodness I am just so overjoyed!” Jasmine exclaimed following her emotional win. “When I was in the middle of exams and trying to bake while I was trying to learn, it’s been so much. But I have done it and I am just so unbelievably happy and to have done it with such an awesome group of people.”
Jasmine’s win was no surprise to Paul and Prue, after she had a tied record of five Star Bakers this season.
“And to win five Star Bakers and then win overall that’s never happened before,” Paul said. “She has done an incredible job all the way through the Bake Off this year. She is a worthy winner, and she is the best one we have seen for quite a while actually.”
With Prue adding, “She is an extraordinary girl.”
In the end, Jasmine’s win was bigger than proving she had what it takes in the kitchen but showing that she could show up for herself in a way she couldn’t imagine amid her battle with alopecia.
“If I had told myself three years ago that I would be going about my life without wearing a wig, with no hair, I would have laughed and said, ‘Don’t be ridiculous,'” Jasmine told Channel 4 after the finale aired in the U.K. on Nov. 5. “I could never have imagined being on the Bake Off, let alone doing it with no hair.”
“Life with alopecia has definitely been challenging at times,” she added. “I am still very much in the process of learning to love it. But I am getting to the point where more days than not, I am actually really enjoying looking a bit different. Having Alopecia has (and is) changing my perception of what beauty is. Being authentically yourself, the way you were made to be, is so much more beautiful than trying to look like everyone else around you.”

In the end, teams will crumble until only the strongest will be left standing to become the Sweet Empire. Wells Adams will host with Jacques Torres and Yolanda Gampp serving as judges in this holiday baking competition with an edge.
