The Best and Worst Ads for Fall TV

Fall TV is finally upon us, meaning we can finally stop paying attention to ads and make fun of them instead! While there are a few that genuinely do a good job at actually promoting their show, most are hilarious, weird, or just plain bad. Join us, won't you, as we determine which ones are which...

AMC

Best: The Walking Dead (AMC)

Most ads with a smiling Jeffrey Dean Morgan are quality ads, bat or no, but this one is such a welcome departure from The Walking Dead's usual promotion that it gets to be one of the best this year.

Best: Scream Queens (Fox)

All of the season 2 characters may have gotten promos like this, but anything featuring Dr. John Stamos have been particularly effective.

Meh: Gotham (Fox)

Torn between thinking this cheesy poster kinda works for this show, and the fact that we keep having to squint to see who's in the snow globe.

Best: How to Get Away with Murder (ABC)

Not all that exciting, but we're not here to argue with Viola Davis' smolder.

Meh: The Last Man on Earth (Fox)

One of TV's most interesting shows could probably manage a more interesting ad, though we've got a lot of respect for all the work it took to photoshop craft these portraits.

Best: American Horror Story: Roanoke (FX)

It's unclear if this image actually relates to anything happening this season, but our interest was piqued and you can't say this picture ain't (terrifyingly) pretty.

Best: Atlanta (FX)

Charming and a tad surreal, just like the show.

Best: Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Fox)

Squads were so six months ago, but this one is so endearing that we'll let it slide.

Meh: Legends of Tomorrow (The CW)

Why is the Atom the biggest character? Why is Caity Lotz popping out of a speedometer? Why is one half of Firestorm way bigger than the other half? Why can't we stop staring at this rainbow explosion? So many questions, so little time.

Best: Supergirl (The CW)

All this show needs to do right now is remind us that it is now on the CW and we are sold, and this poster understands that. Good job, poster.

Meh: Arrow (The CW)

His fight, his city, his legacy, his nostrils.

Meh: The Flash (The CW)

The Flash got so much redder that we can barely look at this poster.

CBS

Best? The Great Indoors (CBS)

OK, so this isn't technically an ad, but it is a promotional shot that perfectly communicates what this show is: Joel McHale smirking while standing in a sea of phones and their pet millennials, while Stephen Fry attempts to look like we're not all wondering what on earth he's doing there. So it works!

Fox

Best: Pitch (Fox)

This show knows & fully leans into the fact that aside from its charming lead (Kylie Bunbury), its biggest strength is Mark-Paul Gosselaar('s beard). MPG makes this ad.

Lauren Piester

Best: Fear the Walking Dead (AMC)

This billboard is actually really cool and we have no jokes about how cool it is.

Best? MacGyver (CBS)

A+ to MacGyver for this billboard that knows, embraces, and uses the fact that it's a billboard to make us chuckle every time we see it on Hollywood Blvd.

Meh: This Is Us (NBC)

This may be real, and love, and life, and us, and other vague nouns and adverbs, but this also doesn't tell us anything about this show or how wonderful it is.

Worst: Designated Survivor (ABC)

Sideways American flag + that blue color from the Speechless ads + one stripe is black + stripes in the E + Kiefer Sutherland lookin' sexy in a peacoat = too many concepts on one poster.

Best: Superstore (NBC)

Superstore. Superheroes. We get it and we love it.

Fox/Twitter

Meh: The Exorcist (Fox)

The power of Pat Benatar compels you! Honestly that tagline ruins this.

Meh: Lethal Weapon (Fox)

They could do better than "Good cop, crazy good cop," but at least they know cool guys don't look at explosions.

ABC

Best: Black-ish (ABC)

This is the best mix of black and neon this show has ever done with its black and neon ads, like the poster's growing up with the family.

John Ross Bowie/Twitter

Meh: Speechless (ABC)

Why are they the Beatles? Why does everyone look like they're walking except Minnie Driver? Guess we're just not supposed to think about it too hard.
