ScarJo, Single and Gothy
From Oct. 18, 2012
Post-split from Nate Taylor, America's favorite Gen-Y bombshell has broadened her appeal among horror geeks with a busty, nose-ringed Bride of Frankenstein look on the cover of the new W magazine. Too bad we won't see/hear her screamin' Janet Leigh homage in Hitchcock till next month.
Xbox Music Getting Up in iTunes' Face
Microsoft's foray into the digital music biz has generated mixed reviews so far, but we're glad to see anyone pose a challenge to Apple's MP3 superstore juggernaut. Also nice to have a use for our Xbox that doesn't involve our elven alter-egos. Even it does involve Justin Bieber.
Tyler Perry's Non-Tyler Perry Movie
In director Rob Cohen's new thriller Alex Cross, TP ditches his own worn-out, lowbrow Hollywood brand to reinvent himself as a steely action hero. It's no Silence of the Lambs, but it suggests Perry might be able to make a living out of drag.
Red Bull, the New NASA
With a real-life stunt like Felix Baumgartner's 24-mile free fall under its belt, the energy drink maker may as well move ahead with a full-on space program. We're thinking a monster truck-sized Mars probe that runs on taurine.
Fix It Felix Jr. on iPhone
This addictive video game tie-in to Disney's upcoming Wreck-It Ralph movie is turning out to be the arcade throwback Gen-Xers have been waiting for. It's enough to make us want an iPhone case with a built-in coin slot, just for old time's sake.
Taylor Swift all over the place
From custom Keds sneakers to a Papa John's promotion that can get her new album delivered to your door (with a large one-topping pie!), Tay is pulling out all the cross-promotional stops for Red, releasing Oct. 22. Good thing it's a rock-solid set of post-tween pop that even a starchy Kennedy kid could dance to.
Glenn Beck's Blue Jeans
The often manic, occasionally teary, always entertaining conservative host has seized upon the ultimate agent of American social change: a line of $129 blue jeans designed to raise funds for local charities. Will those emotive TV close-ups move from his face to his denim-clad butt?
Tim Robinson on SNL
There are a few standout rookies in this season's cast, but watch for Robinson to emerge as a fan favorite. He hasn't landed a signature character or viral "moment" of his own, but his understated wit and everydude demeanor are adding subtle genius to each episode.
Miley Cyrus, the New Gwen Stefani
From Oct. 11, 2012
Or is she "the new former Brigitte Nielsen?" Check out some old clips from Beverly Hills Cop II and judge for yourself. Either way, we wholeheartedly endorse MC's platinum dye job and fashion-forward evolution. It's working for us. You, too?
Still Watching 30 Rock
Maybe it's too early to tell, but even our most cynical inner hater is pretty psyched about the new and final season of Tina Fey's situational masterwork. Even the dubious addition of Hazel from last season is starting to bear some unlikely comic fruit, as seen in her recent attempt to seduce Tracy with … blue boobs?!
Questlove, Wedding Photographer
The Roots drummer slash Fallon maestro slash DJ-to-the-stars already has one of the most engaging Twitter feeds in all of tweetdom. He upped the ante with candid (and aesthetically pleasing!) pics from the wedding of David Cross and Amber Tamblyn.
Watching Looper With In-Theater Commentary
We were sold on Looper director Rian Johnson from the first time we saw his previous team-up with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, 2005's awesome Brick. Now he's got us hooked all over again with a downloadable audio commentary that fans can enjoy while watching his trippy actioner in the theater (we suspect other filmmakers will soon follow suit).
Ke$ha Again
Just when we thought we'd have to settle for deejays busting out "Tik Tok" at wedding receptions for the next decade or so, along comes the nihilistic new single "Die Young" and the promise of a full-on autobiography by year's end. For those nights when Katy Perry is just too cerebral, Ke$ha's still our girl.
Revolution
This week's killing off of Maggie made it clear that NBC's hit post-apocalyptic churner is not effing around. Fans can also rest easy knowing it's been picked up for a full year's run. Who knew the collapse of modern civilization would be so DVR-friendly?
Jay-Z, Subway Commuter
After getting mobbed by fans and onlookers in the New York subway en route to a triumphant Brooklyn gig, Hova isn't likely to take the R train again anytime soon. We just love it that he tried—and that he didn't endanger little Blue Ivy by trying to lug the stroller along with him.
Non-American Bond girls
The best female interlopers in the 007 franchise have always been the exotic European ones, from classic Swiss bombshell Ursula Andress to current Skyfall starlets Bérénice Marlohe (France) and Tonia Sotiropoulou (Greece). Both are beautiful bricks in a wall that may one day seal off those awful memories of Denise Richards in The World is Not Enough.
Cinderella on Blu-ray
We feel kinda bad now for ragging on Disney princesses last week. That was before we checked out the eye-popping 'Rella remaster, which looks so good even Naomi Wolf might finally throw down for a Blu-ray player. Corny trappings and tittering mice notwithstanding, it's a proper classic.
Tim Tebow in Vogue
Tebow's welcome in New York wore out so fast you'd think he was wearing a Patriots hoodie. But if the figure he strikes in the new Vogue is any indication, dude can always fall back on a modeling career.
El Classico, the Super Bowl of Soccer
From Oct. 4, 2012
Fans of international footy are bracing for a truly super Sunday as Real Madrid faces Barcelona. Still don't know who Lionel Messi or Cristiano Reynoldo are? Get wise—this recurring rivalry makes the average NFL border battle look like a daycare sandbox scuffle.
Solange’s “Losing You” Video
The coolest auntie in show business hits a new high with this captivating clip. Shot on location in South Africa, it's loaded with the kind of retro fashion finery that Andre 3000 used to pine for, set against the starkly mesmerizing backdrops of the Cape Town ghetto.
Brandon Lloyd’s Amazing Teeth
While meme-spotters frantically scour the Web for pictures of Justin Bieber's puke, count us among the thousands of fans and non-fans of professional football who've been seduced by the Patriot receiver's heroic mid-air grin. <camera clicky noise!>
