Acting is one of the most sought-after careers in the world, which means it takes a great deal of talent and hard work to be successful in this career path. The industry is known to be tough, and not easy to build a career in. Furthermore, it’s often perceived as youth-centric. But Manuel Rafael Lozano has defied this convention. This Puerto Rico-born, now based in Santa Monica, California, actor has rewritten the script of what it means to pursue one’s dreams, regardless of age or background. As a pivotal figure at Iris Tuesday Productions, his path to the silver screen is a testament to resilience, passion, and seizing opportunities.

Manuel’s story begins far from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. Armed with a degree from Berkeley and a background in telecommunications, he ventured into tech sales and software development. Later on, showcasing an entrepreneurial spirit from the start. Entrepreneurial endeavors led him to establish a successful brick-and-mortar music school. Surrounded by musicians and artists, he discovered a newfound passion for the arts, prompting him to explore acting later in life.

The turning point took place unexpectedly, with a call from his brother-in-law Shalin Amin, who was in the midst of rebranding Uber. This led to a serendipitous encounter with the world of commercials. Inspired by other actors on set, Manuel took the leap, posting his photos on casting sites and actively auditioning for various roles. From an eHarmony commercial to embracing rejection and uncertainty, Manuel’s journey epitomizes resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges.

Embracing every opportunity with the tenacity of a seasoned salesperson, Manuel enrolled in acting classes. He attended a two-year program at both Ruskin School of Acting and Baron Brown Studio to hone his acting skills, undeterred by the challenges of age and inexperience. He laughs and he recalls, “Of course, I was the oldest person in these acting classes. And all these young 20-year-olds looking to become actors, I felt like I was in this alternate universe, but I embraced it.” His dedication paid off as he landed roles in acclaimed series like Criminal Minds and 9-1-1, showcasing his versatility and commitment to his acting career trajectory.

“I learned quickly from my background in sales that you’re always starting with a ‘no’,” this actor reflects. “The only thing you can do is change it to a ‘yes’.” This mindset propelled him forward, even as doubts lingered. Embracing his age as an asset rather than a hindrance, Manuel Lozano delved into acting classes, honing this craft and defying industry stereotypes. From commercials to TV and film, each rejection fueled his determination to succeed.

Yet, this entrepreneur’s story transcends the confines of the silver screen, realizing that his experience in sales and as a business owner could be an asset behind the camera. At the heart of his narrative is Isabel’s Garden, a poignant film directed and written by his wife Kit Rich and produced by Iris Tuesday Productions, marking a milestone in his career. The making of the film symbolizes the fusion of passion and perseverance, navigating the delicate balance between creativity and business know-how.

Manuel Lozano shares the beautiful story behind this film, “I play the role of Diego, Maya’s husband who dies in a tragic accident. Maya is career-focused but now has to build a relationship with her stepdaughter.” Further sharing the journey while producing the film, he adds, “As I learned from running a business, you are only as successful as the team you put together. I relied on some incredible talent, and working with actors like Karen David was such an honor for me.”

Reflecting on his own role in Isabel’s Garden, Manuel shares, “As Diego, I found myself immersed in a character whose journey mirrored my own — navigating life’s uncertainties while embracing newfound passions.” Balancing the demands of acting and producing required a delicate dance, yet Manuel’s commitment to delivering a memorable experience for audiences remained unwavering.

As Isabel’s Garden garners acclaim on the festival circuit with Best Writing and Best Feature Film wins, Manuel’s journey serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring artists and entrepreneurs alike. With each role, each rejection, and each triumph, he continues to redefine what it means to pursue passion with unwavering determination. As the credits roll on his remarkable journey, one thing is clear: Manuel Rafael Lozano's story is far from reaching its final act. He hopes that his journey inspires others to never give up on their dreams, no matter their age or circumstance.
