The View became the scene of an awkward family moment thanks to Joy Behar.
On the ABC daytime talk show Oct. 30, the comedian asked her cohost Sara Haines, whose parents were in the audience, about her romantic past while discussing the family's appearance on the latest episode of The View: Behind the Table podcast.
"Are you going to bring up that lesbian relationship you said you had,” Joy asked, “back at Smith?"
In response, Sara, a 2000 graduate of Smith College in Massachusetts, laughed, exclaiming, "Dad, earmuffs! Earmuffs!" as fellow cohosts Whoopi Goldberg, Sunny Hostin and Alyssa Farah Griffin looked on.
Sara, who has been married to Max Shifrin since 2014 and shares three children with him, then joked, "It’s a good thing my dad doesn’t always watch," to which Whoopi responded, "Now he will."
E! News has reached out to reps for Joy and Sara for comment on the exchange, which has gone viral, and has not heard back.
Sara and her parents, Sandy and Dick Haines, also discuss her college past on the podcast, although her former dating experiences was not the focus of the conversation.
"She fell in love with Smith and at that time, it was very expensive," Sandy said about her daughter. "I always told the children, if they would get in a school, we would pay for it. I mean, it's your job to figure it out where you want to be. And [she] came back and said, 'I want to go to Smith, but Dad will never let me.'"
Sandy said that when Sara—who went on to pursue a career in television and worked on NBC's Today and ABC's Good Morning America before joining The View in 2016—later shared her career plans with them, her dad was like, "I spent all that money for what?"
As Dick explained, "I envisioned a different career path."
Both of Sara's parents said they thought she would become a comedian.
"I know you did, because you've laughed at all my jokes," she said to her mom, to which her dad added, "I laughed at some of them."
