Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson doesn't need paperwork to let them know how much Kurt Russell cares.
That's why the siblings turned down the Silkwood actor's offer to legally adopt them when he started dating their mom Goldie Hawn back in the 1980s.
"Kurt came into my life when I was 6 and he essentially he raised me," Oliver shared on the Nov. 24 episode of his and Kate's Sibling Revelry podcast. "There was a moment when he asked us—myself and Kate—if we wanted to be adopted, and we said no."
While Oliver said he and the Almost Famous actress—whose biological dad is Bill Hudson—likely declined the offer because they were too young to know "what it even f--king meant" to be adopted, he does remember telling Kurt, "'Well, we don't need it. The love is right there.'"
"There's no doubt that he is my dad," Oliver added. "I call him Pa."
However, the Splitting Up Together star does feel there's another "side" of family his younger self never got to explore with his dad out of the picture.
"My dad—he was around for a little bit, then he bailed," he explained to guest Brandi Cyrus, who was adopted by Billy Ray Cyrus after the country singer married her mom Tish Cyrus in 1993. "We have a good relationship now, but it took a long, long, long, long time, but we're there."
Oliver added, "When you don't have your biological around, it's hard to replace that no matter what."
But for Brandi, whose biological father is Tish's ex Baxter Neal Helson, being legally adopted by Billy Ray wasn't a "huge moment" since their family—which includes siblings Trace Cyrus, Miley Cyrus, Braison Cyrus and Noah Cyrus—was pretty much blended when the paperwork went through.
"I was a little bit older when we like did the legal thing," she shared. "And for me, a lot of it was like, 'Well, I want to have the same last name as my the rest of my family.' I want to be able to put 'Cyrus' when I'm at school and be 'Brandi Cyrus.'"
Besides, she noted, Billy Ray—who divorced Tish in 2022—had already been parenting her for years at that point.
"I don't really remember it feeling like a big deal," she said of her adoption. "I already felt like a Cyrus."
