Watch: Skier Mikaela Shiffrin Says She Was "Stabbed" in Crash at World Cup Competition

A scary moment for skier Mikaela Shiffrin.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist suffered a terrifying crash while competing in a World Cup competition, the Stifel Killington Cup in Vermont, Nov. 30. The 29-year-old hit two gates before crashing into a fence during a giant slalom event, which ultimately resulted in "severe muscle trauma," the U.S. Ski Team said in a statement.

Shiffrin, who was sidelined from the rest of the event as a result of her injury, detailed her crash the following day, telling NBC Sports Dec. 1 that she has a "stab wound" in one of her oblique muscles, but that it's unclear exactly what punctured her abdomen.

"We’re just not totally sure how I got punctured," she said. "All things considered, quite lucky."

The skier also shared a message for her fans directly from her hospital bed following the incident, revealing that she'd be cheering on her teammates "from the sidelines" for the rest of the competition.

"Not really too much cause for concern at this point," she said in the Dec. 1 TikTok video. "I just can't move. I have a pretty good abrasion, and something stabbed me."

"I am so sorry to scare everybody," Shiffrin continued. "It looks like all scans so far are clear, so thank you for the support and concern and congratulations to the winners and my teammates for incredible performances."

Though the event organization said in a statement to NBC News that "Shiffrin was cleared of major injury," the athlete is unsure about when she'd be able to return to competition.

"Right now I’m pretty limited in doing anything," she shared. "But we’ll see how it goes the next couple days."

The U.S. Ski Team shed more light on her current condition and mindsight the day after the crash, as well.

"After the crash, Mikaela was in shock, unable to move and concerns about internal organ trauma," the statement read. "While she's incredibly grateful there's no ligament or bone damage, the puncture wound on her abdomen and her severe muscle trauma make it impossible for her to compete or even walk well at the moment."

"Missing this race, which means so much to her, is heartbreaking, but her priority is healing," the statement continued before adding that Shiffrin will be "taking the time needed for a full recovery."
