Brody Jenner doesn’t look back in anger.
After opening up on his current relationship with dad Caitlyn Jenner in the latest episode of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test, the 41-year-old—who shares 18-month-old daughter Honey with fiancée Tia Blanco—detailed why he doesn’t necessarily see her absence during his childhood as a bad thing.
“I look at it as a positive,” Brody explained in an interview with People published Jan. 17. “She wasn't around for me growing up that much. I still saw her sometimes, she wasn’t completely absent, but I still say I definitely am going to be much more present as a father, and it taught me to be that, so I'm grateful for it.”
And while parts of his relationship with his dad—who welcomed Brody and son Brandon Jenner, 43, with ex Linda Thompson—were negative, Brody said that there are “so many good things” to focus on when it comes to Caitlyn.
“It only does damage to yourself the more you focus on negative stuff,” he added. “I think that our relationship over time is I just kind of let things go.”
Indeed, Brody—who is half-sibling to Burt Jenner, 46 and Cassandra Marino, 44, whom Caitlyn shares with ex Chrystie Scott, as well as Kylie Jenner and Kendall Jenner, whom Caitlyn shares with ex Kris Jenner—echoed this sentiment during the Jan. 15 episode of Special Forces.
“Just recently, I got a real, sincere apology,” Brody explained during the episode. "It was the first time in my life that I've ever gotten an apology. You know, I'm sorry for not being there, and honestly, it meant a lot.”
Indeed, Brody noted that things started to “make sense” to him regarding his relationship with his father in recent years.
“When I found out that Caitlyn, or Bruce, wanted to be Caitlyn, it was sort of a relief," he continued. “I think not having Bruce around growing up and her doing that transition, it was tough just being her son.”
Overall, Brody emphasized that having Caitlyn as his dad is not something he’d change, adding, “I think it really has shaped me to do everything different and to really be there and to be present to my little girl.”
