UPDATE: Karla Sofía Gascón has denied posting the viral tweet calling Selena Gomez a "rich rat."

"It's not mine, of course," Karla told CNN en Español in Spanish in an on-camera interview posted online Feb. 2—one month before the 2025 Oscars—when asked if she wrote the tweet in an insulting way to Selena. "I've never said anything about my partner, I would never refer to her like that."

Another past controversial social media message attributed to Oscar nominee Karla Sofía Gascón has been unearthed ahead of the 2025 ceremony.

A viral image of a tweet published by the Latin Times Jan. 31, appearing to have been shared by Karla's account in 2022, suggests the Oscar nominee insulted her Emilia Pérez costar Selena Gomez while commenting on a news story debunking rumors of a feud between the fellow actress and Hailey Bieber, who married her ex Justin Bieber in 2018.

"She's a rich rat who acts like a poor wretch whenever she can and will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend and his wife," read the Spanish-language tweet, in response to an article published in Mexican newspaper Reforma about Selena and Hailey posing for their first public photos together.

E! News has reached out to reps for Karla, who deactivated her X account Jan. 30, and Selena for comment and has not heard back.

The alleged social media post is one of several controversial messages that many users have accused Karla of sharing in the past about Muslims, the killing of George Floyd and diversity at the Oscars. E! News has not verified the authenticity of the images of the tweet screenshots, which have gone viral on social media in recent days ahead of the March 2 award show.

Following the backlash, the 52-year-old, the first openly trans performer to be nominated for an Academy Award at this year's show, has apologized for making controversial remarks on social media, without confirming specific offensive comments.

"I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt," Karla said in a Jan. 30 statement to NBC News via a Netflix spokesperson. "As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain."

On Feb. 1, Karla shared another apology. "The first thing I would like to do is to sincerely apologize to all those who have felt bad about the way I have expressed myself at any stage of my life," she wrote in Spanish on Instagram. "I cannot repair my past actions, I can only say that today I am not the same person as 10 or 20 years ago."

She suggested that fake quotes have been attributed to her. "They have created posts as if it were me, insulting even my colleagues," she continued, "things that I wrote to glorify as if they were criticism, jokes as if they were reality, words that without the background only seem like hate."

Last week, Karla denied reports that alleged she insulted fellow Oscar Best Actress nominee Fernanda Torres, without specifying where she was accused of making the comments.

"I have never, at any point, said anything bad about Fernanda Torres or her movie," Karla said in a Jan. 21 video interview with Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo. "However, there are people working with Fernanda Torres tearing me and Emilia Pérez down. That speaks more about their movie than mine."
