The Squid Game cast is mourning one of their own.
Lee Joo-Sil, who played Park Mal Soon on the second season of the Netflix series, has died just months after sharing she had been diagnosed with stomach cancer, her talent agency 1230Culture confirmed, per local news outlet Korea JoongAng Ilbo.
The veteran actress went into cardiac arrest at her family home in Uijeongbu Feb. 2 before being rushed to St. Mary's Hospital where she died, the agency shared.
Lee had previously disclosed that she'd been diagnosed with stomach cancer three months earlier.
Her latest diagnosis came over 30 years after the actress learned she had Stage 4 breast cancer in 1993 and was subsequently given one year to live, Korea JoongAng Ilbo reported. Lee underwent chemotherapy and was declared cancer-free after battling the disease for over 13 years.
"I found out at the end of stage 3 and it soon became stage 4," she reflected in July 2023, per People. "I overcame it well because I have children."
"Everyone becomes stronger when faced with a crisis," Lee continued. "If you let everything go, you become helpless. When I was contacted by a film company to work with them, I said, ‘I’m sick,’ and they said, ‘That’s an illness, and we’re working.’ I was grateful for that kind of thinking."
The actress was born in 1944 and began working in theater in 1965, appearing onstage in productions of Death of a Salesman and Macbeth.
On screen, Lee was known for her roles in such films as 2016's Train to Busan and 2014's Roaring Currents. In addition to Squid Game, the actress also had memorable turns on series like The Uncanny Counter and It's Beautiful Now.
While she fought cancer for the first time, the actress received a degree in public health from Wonkwang University in 2010, according to Korea JoongAng Ilbo.
