Euphoria’s favorite drama queens (yes, that includes Nate Jacobs) are returning to East Highland.
With the HBO show having officially started production earlier this week, a few fresh faces have been added to the mix along with the return of most of the main cast. Joining the ranks of Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Hunter Schafer, Maude Apatow, Jacob Elordi and the rest of the gang will be Grammy winner Rosalía, former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch and A Different World star Kadeem Hardison.
“If there's anything that excites me as much as finding a good melody or a good lyric, it's becoming a better performer every day,” Rosalía said in a statement posted to X (formerly Twitter). “Euphoria has been my favorite series of the last few years and I couldn't be happier and more grateful to be acting alongside all these colleagues that I admire so much and contributing my ‘granito de arena’ to bring Sam [Levinson]'s vision to reality. I can't wait to share what we're doing!!!”
With excited new characters added to the mix, the third season of the drama will take place years after the end of season two, taking the story far beyond high school. Unfortunately, this also means that some cast members, including Storm Reid and Barbie Ferreira, will not be returning to see their characters mature into adulthood.
“I’m very excited for season three,” Storm—who played the younger sister of Zendaya’s Rue Bennett—told Rotten Tomatoes in November. “Unfortunately, Gia’s not returning to the third season, but I am so, so indebted to the cast and the crew of that show, to HBO.”
“Euphoria’s a really special thing,” she continued. “I’m so glad that that’s a part of my legacy and that I was a part of such a cultural phenomenon. I’m forever grateful, forever indebted. I can’t wait to see what season three has in store. I’m so excited.”
And Barbie, who starred as Kat Hernandez, confirmed her exit back in 2022.
"After four years of getting to embody the most special and enigmatic character Kat, I'm having to say a very teary eyed goodbye," she wrote on her Instagram Stories at the time. "I hope many of you could see yourself in her like I did, and that she brought you joy to see her journey into the character she is today."
And as the rest of the cast returns to set, they will surely be faced with the difficult emotions that come from Angus Cloud’s tragic death in 2023.
"[My costars and I] were constantly on the phone with each other crying because it was just such a shock," Sydney told Glamour in an interview months after the 25-year-old, who played fan-favorite Fezco, died of an overdose. "I don’t think it’ll truly feel real or hit me until we’re filming.”
As for what you can expect from the show’s long-awaited third season? Aside from knowing that there will be a significant time jump, it seems not even Zendaya knows what kind of antics these undeniably messy characters will get into.
“It will be fascinating to see and understand these characters outside of the context of high school,” Zendaya said in an October interview with Entertainment Weekly. “And how all the stuff that we saw when they were kids and they were in high school affects the kind of adulthood they have and who they become in a much bigger world. I'll be interested to see what happens too.”
