Barbie Ferreira sees this rumor as mere fan fiction.
Years after the actress, whose Euphoria character was no stranger to dabbling in internet fan fiction herself, was at the center of speculation over behind-the-scenes drama leading up to her departure after season two, she is setting the record straight.
“I never walked off set,” Barbie explained on the March 19 episode of The Viall Files. “There was never anything like that. That was like a whole thing. I absolutely never did that. You could ask the hundreds of people that were there every day.”
She emphasized that after reflecting on the future of her character Kat, leaving the HBO series was best for both her and creator Sam Levinson as he crafted the next installment.
“It wasn't just my choice,” the 28-year-old said. “I think after having a lot of conversation and after season two, there was just nowhere to go. Instead of me lingering around for nine months, it was best for both of us that we just kind of ended it there.”
Nonetheless, she has nothing but love for Euphoria—which will premiere its third and likely final season in 2026—and Kat, a high school student navigating body image issues and finding empowerment through her fanfiction and a cam-girl alter ego.
“Kat means the world to me,” Barbie shared. “I spent so many years pouring everything into her, but you don't wanna ruin a good thing. It was a mutual decision. It was absolutely not just me.”
Although it was a difficult resolution, she was ready to say goodbye to Eastland High School for good.
“With acting, things happen all the time and you just have to have thick skin and just make the right decisions for you and your career,” she said. “It was hard. I was really young and it was tough, obviously. There was a lot of discourse about it that wasn't true.”
As she put it, “Fan theories are crazy and most of the time, they're not right.”
Barbie first shared the announcement in an Instagram Story in August 2022, noting that she was saying a “very teary-eyed goodbye” after “four years of getting to embody the most special and enigmatic character Kat.”
She added, "I hope many of you could see yourself in her like I did, and that she brought you joy to see her journey into the character she is today."
While Barbie’s former costars Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi and more will return for one more season, it won’t grace screens for another year. In the meantime, here’s when more of your favorite shows are back.
