Cousins Beach has always been messy.
And this summer, the beach town that’s home to Jenny Han’s The Summer I Turned Pretty series—which will air its third and final season in July—might offer a new level of drama that will surprise fans.
“There are the things that [fans] know, and there are things they think they know,” Han, 44, told Entertainment Weekly in an interview published March 31. “And then there’s going to be, hopefully, things that surprise them.”
While Han didn’t reveal what’s to come, this subtle teaser adds more tension to the Prime Video love triangle. The show’s second season, which aired in 2023, ended with lead character Belly (played by Lola Tung) choosing to continue her romance with Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) over his brother—and her ex—Conrad (Christopher Briney).
And it seems the duo are still going strong in the forthcoming third season, which will have a slight time jump. Similar to the timeline of the third book, We’ll Always Have Summer, Belly is at the end of her freshman year of college. As for her relationship with Jeremiah, Han noted there will be “so many amazing scenes” that’ll make fans swoon.
“Lola and Gavin have really great chemistry and got into such a good rhythm with each other,” she continued. “It’ll be joyful for people to witness it.”
Meanwhile, Conrad has slightly distanced himself from the couple over the course of their two-year romance—but don’t fret, he’s still very much a major player in the show. (And, if the books are any indication, for Belly’s heart.)
While the show takes many cues from Han’s books, she still takes some creative liberties with bringing them to life onscreen. As for the upcoming surprise twists, Tung reassured that Han would never “do anything that doesn’t make sense for the story.”
“The one thing I’ve always admired about Jenny is that every season and every decision about what's coming next is purely to serve the story,” she explained to EW. “It’s all about this beautiful world she's created and giving the fans something really, really special and giving us something really special to work with.”
