Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade definitely understood the assignment at the 2025 Met Gala.
The couple made sure to incorporate this year’s “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” theme into their looks as they arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual fundraiser in New York May 5. (See all the stars in attendance at this year’s gala here.)
For Gabrielle, 52, that included a black floor-length gown with a contrasting white train, along with white roses tucked into her slicked hairdo and a statement necklace. As for the 43-year-old NBA star, he coordinated wardrobes with his wife by wearing a white tailcoat suit jacket and bejeweled shirt along with black pants and a black tie.
This year’s theme was inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, with a focus on the evolution of Black men’s style. Fittingly, the gala’s fashion-forward co-chairs include A$AP Rocky, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton and Pharrell Williams, with LeBron James serving as an honorary co-chair.
Guests were also encouraged to experiment with the “Tailored For You” dress code, described by the museum as being “purposefully designed to provide guidance and invite creative interpretation.”
Having attended the gala numerous times over the years, Gabrielle and Dwyane—who wed in 2014—know how to make the most of the exclusive soirée with their fellow invitees.
“It's all about catching up and hanging out and having fun,” she told E! News at the event in 2021. “But, really trying to appreciate each other and show love to these amazing designers.”
Indeed, fashion is at the heart of the gala for Gabrielle, who has spoken extensively in the past about her deep connection to fashion as a creative outlet.
“My style evolves daily and I dress how I feel and sometimes I feel powerful in a suit and sometimes I feel most powerful naked,” she told People in April 2024. “I indulge whatever it is that I'm feeling because the expression through clothes is going to be much more authentic if I dress the way I feel and not to be a hanger for someone else. That's worked for me.”
And like his wife, Dwyane has also been vocal about style as a form of self-expression.
“Everyone has an idea of who they think you are, but no one really gets that opportunity to know who you are,” he told CR Fashion Book in September. “And through fashion, you will be able to express how you feel and what you’re feeling in those moments. That’s one thing that I’ve loved about being in this fashion game, is the ability to be able to express yourself.”
