Watch: Why Beverly Hills, 90210’s Ian Ziering Waited a Year to Pay Tribute to Shannen Doherty

Ian Ziering knows that grief is complicated.

As the Beverly Hills, 90210 alum paid tribute to his former costar Shannen Doherty on the first anniversary of her death, he revealed why he waited to honor her on social media.

"When she died a year ago, I didn't post anything," Ian wrote in his July 13 Instagram caption alongside of a photo of him and Shannen at Steel City Con 2024. "And yes, some people criticized that. To them I say: grief isn't a performance. It's personal. Let people grieve how they grieve."

He admitted he struggled being around his castmates over the past year without Shannen, especially as the group continues to mourn Luke Perry, who died of a massive ischemic stroke in 2019. Ian emphasized, "That kind of loss doesn't fade. It just rearranges the furniture in your heart."

"I miss Shannen," he wrote. "We clashed now and then in the early years of 90210—two strong personalities will do that—but we always had respect. I was the wisecracking comic relief; she was the beautiful chaos, the after-hours headline, the girl who could trash a hotel room and make the tabloids love her for it."

The 61-year-old quipped, "Stop laughing, Shan. You know it's true."

The Sharknado actor recalled first learning of Shannen's breast cancer diagnosis in 2015, which went on to spread to her liver, brain and bones by November 2023.

"Most of the updates sounded less like 'Shannen's fighting cancer' and more like 'cancer picked the wrong woman,'" Ian reflected. "That was her way—strong, defiant, take-no-prisoners tough. Every time I saw her during those years, she was still Shan—fierce, funny, full of life."

The Charmed alum's resilience made her death at 53 seem unreal at first.

"That's why her passing hit me like a freight train," he explained. "I was shocked. I truly believed she was going to pull off one more miracle."

As he mourned the death of his longtime friend, Ian reflected on both of their growth years after she left Beverly Hills, 90210 in 1994.

"As we got older, we mellowed," he shared. "Grew up. Understood what we'd been part of and what we each brought to the table. I'll never forget when she and Jennie [Garth] surprised me at the Chippendales show in Vegas. God, we laughed so hard. It was one of those nights that stays with you."

"So, my dear Shannen," he continued. I think of you often. Your grit. Your fire. Your kind heart that so few really got to see. I still carry all of it with me. Rest easy, Shan."
