Ray J is shutting down rumors surrounding Whitney Houston’s death.
Over a decade after the Grammy winner’s death at from an accidental drowning in the bathtub of her Beverly Hilton hotel room, Ray J addressed online speculation that he had something to do with her tragic 2012 passing.
“That’s the biggest cap I’ve ever heard,” the 44-year-old, who was dating Whitney at the time, said during a July 25 episode of Cam Newton’s Funky Friday podcast. “I’ve heard it since the beginning.”
Detailing that he had previously seen comments blaming him for the “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” singer’s death, Ray J didn’t feel the need to speak on their private romance.
“When you know the truth, why do you have to jump out there and try to tell it to everybody?” he continued. “I didn’t care about what people were saying.”
But lately, the “hurtful” online discourse has been getting out of hand.
“Here’s the truth,” he said. “The way they made that seem is so haunting to me. I wasn’t even there. I was nowhere around. I was in San Diego doing a show.”
In fact, the “Sexy Can I” singer said that he and Whitney planned to publicly announce their relationship at a “Clive Davis event,” referring to the record producer’s annual pre-Grammy gala, the night of her death.
And though he felt that commenting about their relationship was “just so distasteful to tell somebody something that the other person can’t respond to,” Ray J—the younger brother of Whitney’s Cinderella costar Brandy—went on to describe exactly how he learned she had died.
“When I got back to the hotel, they did not let me up at first,” he recalled, “until everything was cleared and it was just the family.”
He even refuted other rumors that he was the person who found Whitney’s body, later clarifying that it was actually her bodyguard Ray Watson.
“I was nowhere to be found,” he emphasized, “and I hate talking about it because I have so much love for her. I’ve never seen her in that state. So to make me that person when I wasn’t even there and then to put murderer on top of that, it’s f--ked up.”
Just last month, the “One Wish” singer called out influencers for using their platforms to further twist the narrative.
“I’ll let a story build ‘cause I don’t gotta explain myself,” Ray J explained to Moneice Slaughter on Twitch last month. “Eventually, if s--t gets too out of control and narratives are being created, I have to say something. Even if you don’t want to. Because it’s like, yo, this s--t’s crazy.”
