Aaron Rodgers is quite literally taking one for the team.
After the NFL star revealed he was married earlier this summer, he shared how his wife, who has only been identified as Brittani, partially influenced his decision to sign a $13.65 million one-year contract with the Steelers.
“I was taking orders from my (new) sister-in-law, Mia,” Aaron, 41, told The Athletic in an interview published August 1. “She’s 20 and she’s the brains of the family; you just have to ask her.”
But while Aaron’s previous contract with the New York Jets earned him around $75 million between the 2023 and 2024 seasons, he admitted he was only “partially serious” that his wife’s sister had anything to do with his decision.
“Every team that I talked to, I said, ‘Listen, if I play, I’m not going to take a ton of money,’” Aaron continued. “I’ve made a ton of money. I don’t need the money.’”
On top of those aspects, Rodgers—who also entertained playing for the New York Giants or the Minnesota Vikings following his early release from the Jets contract—found Mike Tomlin to be a great coach for his 20th season in the NFL.
“It felt like I was talking to a friend, not a coach,” Rodgers added. “Because it wasn’t talking X’s and O’s; it was, ‘How’s this person? How is that person doing?’ And that really meant a lot to me, and it was at the forefront of my mind when I made this decision to play.”
Still, it comes as no surprise that Rodgers—who spent the first 17 years of his professional football career with the Green Bay Packers—would take the perspective of his wife’s family into account, too. The Steelers quarterback’s cheeky update on his in-laws comes shortly after he shared that he has no doubt Brittani is “the one.”
“When you meet the right one, and you’re with the right one, your world changes in a second,” he told Sports Illustrated in an interview published July 26. “To have that person who loves you unconditionally behind the scenes, there’s no better feeling in the world.”
And there’s no doubt that Rodgers feels prepared for the upcoming NFL season with his wife by his side.
“I’ve got the most incredible wife,” he continued. “I just really love her and I’m so grateful to have her by my side at the end. When you have that stability and that rock behind you at the house, you feel like you could do anything.”
