Edyta Sliwinska is sharing insight into a difficult time in her life.
The Dancing With the Stars alum looked back on her learning of her cancer diagnosis last year, sharing that despite the hardships, she’s focusing on how lucky she is.
“Exactly a year ago, I woke up from a semi-conscious state,” Edyta wrote on Instagram Aug. 13, “and a man in a blue coat looked at me and said something no one ever wants to hear: ‘It’s cancer.’”
Confessing that she “didn’t know if I would live to see today,” the 44-year-old admitted she didn’t realize how much the diagnosis would change her life.
“Today, I wear this scar under my belly as a reminder that life is incredibly fragile,” she added. “Appreciate it, live it like there’s no tomorrow, enjoy it, and take care of your health.”
Alongside the message, Edyta, who called herself “the luckiest person on earth to be here today,” the dancer posted a photo posing in a bikini, which put her surgery scar on display.
As she’s battled her cancer, she’s been focused on making changes to her “lifestyle, diet, environment, and exercise routine” all of which have helped her become a healthier version of herself.
“The main thing I learned over the past year is that health is the most underappreciated luxury- you only appreciate it when you lose it.”
In a follow up post on Aug. 15, Edyta opened up about how focusing on her health helped her gain “a completely different perspective” on the life she shares with husband of 18 years Alec Mazo and their children Michael Alexander, 11, and Leia Josephine, 8.
“The fact that my kids are healthy and go to school at all, is a blessing,” she wrote alongside a carousel of family photos. “The fact that I have a busy schedule and so many things to do is a blessing, because there was a time when I was chained to my bed, surviving on painkillers.”
Edyta added, “A year later, I’m here, experiencing all these amazing moments with my family and my friends—moments I could not enjoy just a year ago at the same time because all that was on my mind was cancer.”
Following her initial surgery in 2024, the reality star got candid about how difficult her recovery period was, posting to Instagram at the time, “After my surgery, I was in pain and bedridden. I couldn’t be there for my kids—I couldn’t read them a story, make their dinner, or even give them a hug.”
But even then, Edyta tried to focus on the positive, writing, “Life is beautiful in so many ways. I wouldn’t change mine for anything and intend to live it to the fullest.”
