Life on the road isn't always the easiest—just ask Kirsten Dunst.

The Power of the Dog actress—who shares Ennis, 7, and James, 4, with husband Jesse Plemons—shared that her younger son had a "serious health scare" while she filmed her upcoming film The Entertainment System Is Down in Budapest earlier this year.

As Kirsten recounted to Town & Country in an interview published August 20, Kirsten and Jesse rented a house and enrolled Ennis in school in Hungary in January with the plan for everyone to stay for the duration of the film's six-month shoot—but things took an "extremely frightening" turn when James got sick.

Jesse took the boys back to Los Angeles to be around their extended support system, which left Kirsten alone in Budapest for the rest of filming—though she did fly home in April for a quick family visit.

While the Bring It On star wouldn't share details of James' illness, she did confirm that "everyone is fine now." But that doesn't take away from how scary the situation was in real time, particularly given that she had to be away from her family for work.

Kirsten liked it to "Final Destination, where you’re imagining all the things that could go wrong, worst case scenarios happening to your child."

“I have never seen that movie,” she added. "But I know the concept. That’s how it feels to be a mother at times.”

With some time having passed since James' health scare, Kirsten is able to say that "it brought us together as a family in such a deeper way" and noted that they planned a family vacation to "anywhere James wanted to go."

They chose the Bahamas after he told them that his only request was, "I want to go to a beach where my sandcastle won’t wash away."

While the Oscar nominee tends to keep her personal life fairly private, she did recently give a bit more insight into James' personality.

"He's almost three and when he's bad we call him Jimmy," she said on Jimmy Kimmel Live in April 2024. "He's out of control. We actually call him baby Chris Farley because of the way he walks around and he's just hilarious. He's a crazy little dude."
