Robin Wright thinks a sequel to The Princess Bride would be inconceivable.
And while the actress and her costars from the 1987 classic—including Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Billy Crystal, Chris Sarandon and Christopher Guest—have often been asked about a sequel to the Rob Reiner-directed film, they’re not ready to storm the castle again.
“Sometime after we hit the 30-year mark, the cast did a Zoom call,” Robin shared in an interview with AARP published Sept. 18. “A couple of actors were like, ‘We’ve been asked if we’ll do a sequel.’”
As the 59-year-old recalled jokingly telling them, “‘Well, a lot of us are going to be in a wheelchair.’ So no, no, that will never happen.”
Still, Robin—who shares kids Dylan Frances Penn, 34, and Hopper Jack Penn, 32, with ex husband Sean Penn—has only fond memories of filming.
“We laughed so hard making that movie,” she shared. “We’d have to cut camera and start over again because it was such a giggle-fest.”
And the bonding between the cast and crew off the set, too.
“Normally, you go to a set, you act, you wrap, and you go back to your hotel room alone,” the House of Cards alum explained. “But we took over the hotel.”
Robin remembered how she and some of her costars—along with Christopher’s wife Jamie Lee Curtis—would “all have a potluck dinner in the big kitchen.”
She continued, “It was going home with people you had fun with to play music, eat good food and commune.”
But despite having had such an incredible time making the film, the Forrest Gump actress has no interest in making a sequel.
"I think they entertained the idea for a minute," she summed up for E! News in 2017, quickly adding that she and the rest of the cast aren’t on board. “We thought, 'Don't ruin it. Please don't ruin it.'"
Besides, according to director Rob, the Princess Bride screenwriter William Goldman—who also wrote the book the film is based on—had already scrapped an attempt at writing a follow-up.
“He started a book called Buttercup's Baby, and he wrote three chapters,” the filmmaker told CBR in July, “and he said, 'No, it's not working. I don't want to go there.’”
Especially because, as Rob explained, The Princess Bride was “his favorite thing he ever wrote.”
“I would never do anything that he wouldn't sanction,” Rob continued. “So, I would leave it. It has to be left.”
