Sofía Vergara will always cherish her family’s modern dynamic.
The Modern Family alum shared a rare look into her co-parenting bond with ex-husband Joe Gonzalez—who shares son Manolo Vergara, 34, together—and how they’ve remained close over the years.
“He was my high school sweetheart,” Sofía, 53, told Us Weekly in an interview published on Oct. 1. “We got divorced, but we were always good friends. He lived in Colombia, so it was difficult for him to see Manolo a lot, but he’d make the effort [and they’d] see each other at least once or twice a year.”
The Griselda actor continued, “He’s always been there, and he has a great relationship with Manolo.”
Indeed, Sofía and Joe’s romance started in Colombia. (The duo tied the knot in 1991, but called it quits two years later.) Shortly after their split, she and her son relocated to Miami to focus on her acting career. Though this big move added more distance between the former couple, this space didn’t harm Manolo’s relationship with his dad.
“We’re totally cool,” he confirmed in the joint interview. “We don’t see each other as often because of the distance, but we do what we can.”
As for how Sofía navigated being a single mom during her rise to fame? She noted that she tried to find a balance between work and showing up for Manolo. And while the America’s Got Talent judge eventually found a good middle ground, she still had moments of feeling “guilty” for not being “available all the time.”
“I had to travel a lot because of the entertainment business,” she reflected. “It wasn’t like an office nine-to-five job. Every month was a different schedule. That’s difficult because you miss birthdays and school things.”
But despite making those challenging sacrifices, Sofía—who’s rumored to be dating businessman Douglas Cabbott—appreciated that Joe supported nearly all of her parenting decisions.
“I didn’t have to deal with anyone telling me how to do things,” she explained. “His father trusted me, so that was really cool — [we] didn’t have to fight or put him in the middle. At least [Manolo] didn’t have that. It can be really crazy for kids to have two parents [who aren’t] going in the same direction.”
