Janelle Monáe brought the Halloween spirit to the red carpet.
The 39-year-old turned heads at the Los Angeles premiere of Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of Frankenstein Oct. 6 by wearing facial prosthetics, placed on her nose and lower forehead.
As the singer's stylist Alexandra Mandelkorn noted on Instagram Stories, it was a "creative date night with @janellemonae + fam."
Indeed, Janelle—who paired the prosthetics with a long black jacket, white shirt, black tie and matching shorts and hat—is known for her elaborate fashion and Halloween styles. Last year, she wowed fans with her E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial costume, and has in the past drawn praise for other looks, such as a headless bride in 2019.
"I live for bending the edge of possibility," the Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery actress wrote on Instagram Oct. 4, alongside photos of several of her transformations, "no matter the creative medium because that’s where the real fun begins."
Janelle continued, "Halloween reminds me to play, stay curious, and transform. You never know what’s next. Stay tuned… I’m curious, what y’all think the next transformation will be?"
Meanwhile, the "I Like That" singer is bringing her love of Halloween to the small screen again. Janelle returned as host, or "HalloQueen" of AMC Networks' "FearFest" programming event.
“Halloween is a time to investigate fears, transform them, and celebrate the unknown," she said in a Sept. 17 statement provided by the group. "Horror has always been a space to honor the horror classics, like the films that shaped me, while championing bold new voices and reinventing the way stories are told."
And her story of how she became the HalloQueen started well before she became famous.
"My costumes got better as I got more jobs," Janelle told the Hollywood Reporter in 2024. "I was a maid. I was a waitress. I worked at Blockbuster, which I loved because I got to see all the movies before other customers. I got first dibs. I can’t imagine what my life would be like without having access to films that were around before I was born, like Night of the Living Dead and Psycho."
She continued, "I used to take money from those jobs and use it to elevate my costumes by mixing and matching from Spencer’s, Party City and thrift stores. That continued over the years. I looked at it as an art project, a moment when I got the chance to show people that I’m an artist with vision. People pay attention to Halloween costumes, so let me give them something to look at."
