Watch: Nicole Kidman Addresses New “Direction” Amid Keith Urban Breakup

Nicole Kidman has gotten used to big little life changes.

During an interview that occurred shortly before she filed for divorce from Keith Urban, Nicole alluded to facing a new chapter.

“How many times do you have to be taught that you think you know where your life is going,” she told Vogue of life in her 50s, “and then it isn’t going in that direction?”

And while news of her breakup hadn’t been shared by the time the Big Little Lies star sat down for the interview in late August, at the time of publishing on Oct. 8 Nicole had sought to legally end her 19-year marriage to Keith just over a week earlier, lending new perspective to her comment.

The Oscar winner also reflected on what it meant to protect her peace in other parts of her life, including opting to not attend the 2024 Venice Film Festival, where she was to be awarded best actress, after the death of her mother Janelle Kidman

“Everyone was saying, ‘You’ve still got to go and accept the award,’” she recalled. “And I just sat for a minute and I went, ‘No, I can’t, I don’t, and I won’t.’”

She continued, “My sense of duty and of being a good girl is so strong. At this age…I’m protecting myself when I need to. It’s my right—as Virginia Woolf used to say—it’s my right as a human being.”

Since her breakup, Nicole has remained tight-lipped on the matter. During her first public appearance on Oct. 6 at Paris Fashion Week’s Chanel Womenswear Spring/Summer 2026 show, however, she shared some insight into how she was faring before stepping back out in front of cameras.

As she told Vogue in a backstage video from the event, “I'm just very nervous, actually.”

Thankfully, she had her and Keith’s two daughters, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14, with her to help calm her nerves. Plus, she was happy to celebrate her friend Matthieu Blazy, who is Chanel’s new creative director.

“I'm very excited for Matthieu because this is a big moment for him,” she added to Vogue. “To be able to celebrate him with his first show with Chanel, and the beginning of an incredible journey together, it's exciting, right?”

And for the Practical Magic star, it was a mother-daughter night out to remember.

“Thank you @chanelofficial for having me and my girls,” she captioned a carousel of Instagram pictures from the fashion show. “So excited to be a part of it with you @matthieu_blazy.”
