Wizards Beyond Waverly Place fans may be hoping this is not what it seems.
After the Wizards of Waverly Place sequel series released its second season on Disney+ Oct. 8, fans were shocked to see a jaw-dropping twist just moments after Alex Russo (Selena Gomez) is revealed to be the mom of Billie Russo (Janice LeAnn Brown) in the finale.
At the end of the new season's final episode, Billie is kidnapped by the evil Lord Morsus (Tobias Jelinek), who forces her to open a rift between the dark magical world and the real world. Alex, her brother Justin (David Henrie) and his wife Giada (Mimi Guanopolos) arrive to help Billie and Justin’s sons Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko) but they are immediately tied up by Morsus.
As Alex witnesses Billie painfully straining herself on the magical portal, she begins to cry, opening up a mysterious locket that she had found earlier in the episode. Once the necklace opens, a memory is restored to everyone present in the room. In the memory, it’s revealed that Alex is, in fact, Billie’s mom.
But that wasn’t the end of the major revelation as it is confirmed that Alex had wiped everyone’s memory in order to protect Billie from Lord Morsus, who is also revealed to Billie’s evil paternal grandfather, Damian Penwolf.
Amid the hysteria of the news, Justin’s son Milo is able to cast a spell that unties everyone, but by that time, the portal to the dark magical world is too big—and someone needs to go inside of it in order to close it.
After an emotional goodbye to Billie, Alex tackles Morsus, knocking them both into the portal before it closes.
Upon the emotional reveal, Billie is comforted by her Uncle Justin and his family. And while Billie considers Alex could very well be dead, Justin assures his niece in a powerful moment that they will be able to find her mother “someday.”
Despite the rollercoaster fans are experiencing, David—who along with Selena is also an executive producer on the series—reminded fans that when it comes to the Russos, any problem can be fixed with the slightest of ease.
“Just so you know, Alex Russo is tougher than you think—and there’s a lot more to come,” David wrote in an Oct. 8 post on X. “You’re asking all the right questions. Stay tuned, #WizardsBeyond has got some magical surprises up our sleeves.”
