Watch: Jeff Probst Weighs in on Possibility of a ‘Golden Survivor’ Season

Jeff Probst has tallied the votes on a possible golden-aged Survivor season.

And while the Golden Bachelor and Bachelorette spinoffs have been hits, the longtime host of the wilderness survival competition series—who admitted he’s heard “this idea from time to time”—isn’t sure the math works for his franchise.

“Here's the truth as I see it,” Jeff said on the Oct. 15 episode of his On Fire with Jeff Probst podcast. “Based on the number of people over, let's say 50, who apply and who we believe are interesting and compelling enough to be on the show and we believe can truly handle the intense physicality—I think if you just limited it to 50-and-over casting, it would be difficult to do two times per year.”

As he put it, “You're looking at 40 people. I just don't think it would work, personally.”

But in addition to the logistical challenges of filling out an over 50 cast, Jeff also noted that having a cast of the same generation would eliminate some of the fun, interpersonal dynamics that can be seen on the current Survivor 49 season.

“I would miss the layers of complexity that come with somebody like Rizo [Velovic, 25] dealing with somebody like Nate [Moore, 47],” he explained. “I think that's part of the fun. In the same way that I would miss it if one gender wasn't on the show and we just did all women or all men.”

He added, “I think it's that clash and the collaboration, the unexpected partnerships and learning about each other, that's a big part of our format.”

In fact, Jeff previously detailed how that clash and collaboration is at an all-time high in season 49, with loyalties formed in the early half of the season to be completely abandoned by the end.

“The back half of the game was the antithesis of loyalty and deep bonds,” he said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published Sept. 24. “It was, ‘Whatever serves me in this very moment, this very second.’ And it made for a really fun season because the front half is really tough.”

The 63-year-old went on to detail how while the season’s tough start sometimes left him “out of breath,” the “gameplay took a full right turn” after the tribal merge, which occurred during the season’s Oct. 15 episode.

“The front half of the game was almost like tattoos in terms of these alliances were formed,” Jeff recalled. “People said, ‘I’m with them for life and I will never betray you.’ And then the merge hits and the back half of the game, it was like, ‘Wait a minute, this turns out this is a temporary tattoo. It’s very easy for me to wash this off right now.’”
