Cheryl Burke is waltzing back to her roots.
The Dancing With the Stars alum revealed that she legally changed her name before the start of her career, and her true moniker has a layered back story.
“My name is Cheryl,” the dance pro, 41, wrote on her TikTok video in August 2022, “but my legal name (until I forced my parents to change it) was Stephanie.”
The choreographer continued the reveal in the comments section, adding that Stephanie was given to her by “my late father Stephen Burke,” who died in March 2018. Meanwhile, Cheryl—which was her legal middle name—is a nod to her mom Sherri Burke.
And while she’s proud that her identity is tied to her loved ones, the former Dance Moms host noted that she switched around her name due to a negative childhood experience.
“There was a girl in my middle school who bullied me named Stephanie,” she explained, “so [I] decided to make my legal name Cheryl Stephanie Burke.”
Though her former first name holds mixed memories, she’s certainly reclaimed her power over the last two decades. Indeed, Cheryl’s new moniker became a staple on DWTS during her competitive run from 2006 to 2022. And recently, the dancer announced that she’s returning to the illustrious ballroom floor—but this time, as a guest judge for the series’ Halloween Night-themed episode.
“The secret’s out!” she wrote on her Oct. 21 Instagram video, which sees her reflecting on her time on DWTS. “It’s been 3 years since my final dance and official retirement, and I still remember that night like it was yesterday. To return now, from the other side of the floor, is something I’ll never take for granted.”
After all, she noted the competition show “has been my home for close to 20 years.”
“The people, the energy, the stories told through movement—it’s where I found my voice long before I ever used it offstage,” she continued. “I’m beyond grateful to reconnect with so many people I spent close to two decades of my life with and can’t wait to meet this new generation of dancers and celebrities bringing their stories to life on that iconic floor.”
