Prince William is expressing his relatable parenting concern.
The Prince of Wales revealed that he and wife Kate Middleton have had plenty of conversations with their children Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7, about getting cell phones, admitting it’s become a sticking point with their eldest.
“Our children don’t have phones,” Prince William told Brazilian TV host Luciano Huck during a Nov. 10 interview in support of the Earthshot Prize. “I think when George moves on to secondary school, then maybe he will have a phone then that has no internet access.”
While he and Kate have remained firm on their decision, their tween son is starting to get a little frustrated.
“To be honest, it’s getting to the point where it’s becoming a little bit of a tense issue,” the 43-year-old explained. “But I think he understands why. We communicate why we don’t think it’s right.”
For William and Kate—who have been married since 2011—their decision is simply based on protecting their kid’s online safety.
“I think it’s the internet access that I have a problem with,” he emphasized. “I think children can access too much stuff they don’t need to see online. So having a phone and text message, the old sort of brick phone as they call them, I think that’s fine.”
Though George hasn’t joined the ranks of peers scrolling through their phones, he has marked different milestones lately. Indeed, the young royal stepped out with his mom to make his first appearance at Royal British Legion’s Festival of Remembrance Nov. 8 at Royal Albert Hall. And George was the perfect complement to Kate—who wore a black dress by Alessandra Rich—in a smart black suit.
As George steps into the limelight, amid his eventual accent in royal life, his father has been conscious of making sure he takes pride in the family’s work.
“There are lots of things to think about with that,” William told Eugene Levy during an episode of The Reluctant Traveler released in October. “But obviously, I want to create a world in which my son is proud of what we do, a world and a job that actually does impact people’s lives for the better.”
And he looks back on his and Prince Harry’s experiences growing up in the public eye.
“That is caveated with, I hope we don’t go back to some of the practices in the past, that Harry and I had to grow up in,” he added noting, “and I’ll do everything I can to make sure we don’t regress in that situation.”
