Watch: Dancing With the Stars' Tom Bergeron Issues Message to ABC in Final Comment as Guest Judge

Tom Bergeron thinks the proof is in the pudding.

During his time as guest judge on the 20th birthday episode of Dancing With the Stars on Nov. 11—marking his first time back in the ballroom since his shocking firing in 2020—Tom used his last moments on camera to issue a plea to ABC rather than critique Alix Earle and Robert Irwin’s relay dance.

“You guys were great,” he told the celebrity contestants and their guest partners, Joey Graziadei and Xochitl Gomez. “But in my last comments as a judge, I want to talk directly to the network.”

Turning his gaze towards the camera, Tom continued, “This show is setting ratings records again, so next season bring back the results show. Let the whole country vote. Let everybody vote.”

The request—which was greeted by cheers from the seated audience—refers to the now defunct, two-episode format of Dancing With the Stars which saw the performances on one night followed by a results episode the next night in which the couple with the lowest score and least votes was eliminated.

Not only did the results episode feature guest performances and behind-the-scenes content, but it also allowed for a bigger voting window.

As Tom further explained to The Hollywood Reporter ahead of his return to the ballroom, “I always mourned the loss of that Tuesday show. I thought it made the voting more fair across the country, because the West Coast can’t vote now unless they’re watching on wherever the hell you’d watch it streamed live.”

“The results show was great,” the 70-year-old added. “It was like a variety show with an elimination at the end. I think the ratings now would really speak to it being time to bring that back.”

The current two-hour format of Dancing With the Stars, which features one, two-hour episode each week, was introduced for season 17 in 2013 and has remained the format ever since.

And during the special birthday episode of the ABC series, which saw viewers vote for their favorite couple within the two-hour window, fan-favorite contestant Andy Richter and his partner Emma Slater were eliminated ahead of the season’s semi-finals.

For Andy, who charmed viewers with his earnest dedication to improving every week, he said he still felt “like a winner.”

"It's changed my life," the 59-year-old added alongside Emma. "I'm a different person because of this show and because of this woman right here. None of this would have happened without her. She knew how to use me."
