The SAG Awards is calling cut on its name.
The Screen Actor's Guild has decided that it's time for a change, and its show will now be known as the Actors Awards, beginning with the 32nd annual ceremony in March 2026.
Union leaders said the decision was made to ensure that the show's title made "obvious sense” to new viewers, following the show's move to Netflix in 2024.
"We wanted to provide clearer recognition in terms of what the show is about for our domestic and global audiences," Jon Brockett—showrunner and executive producer of the award show—and JoBeth Williams—chair of SAG-AFTRA’s Awards Committee—shared in a joint announcement on Nov. 14. "We honor actors in film and television. Laser-focusing the name on those two things became the clearest and most straightforward path for this new chapter of the show."
They explained that their iconic logo and statuette has always been called "The Actor," and it felt like the right time to "make the alignment official."
Ultimately, there will be no change to the awards ceremony, which will continue to be presented by SAG-AFTRA. They emphasized, "Only the show name is changing."
"The foundation remains the same," they noted, "it’s actors honoring actors."
So, what happens to the standing of the awards of former recipients like nine-time winner and record holder Julia Louis-Dreyfus, eight-time winners Alec Baldwin and Julianna Marguiles, seven-time winner Allison Janney and the hundreds of other awardees?
"Past winners and audiences included will still refer to their award and the show as the SAG Awards, and that’s OK," they explained. "We know it’ll take time to adjust to the change."
The transition will be gradual, with plans for studios and networks to still use "Screen Actors Guild Awards" in their award consideration campaigns. However, following this season's nominations, post-nominations in January 2026, they "will be advising everyone to use The Actor Awards."
They concluded by sharing that it is a decision the organization is confident in.
"Our goal is, and has always been, to bring greater clarity and global visibility to every performer the union represents," they added, "and we’re confident the new name does exactly that."
