The talented Gwyneth Paltrow.
The Marty Supreme actress surprised fans at Holly Williams’ Grand Ole Opry 100-year celebration concert on Nov. 10, joining the singer and her husband Chris Coleman onstage to perform.
“Can y’all believe your luck?” Holly asked the crowd as Gwyneth settled at an adjacent microphone, per video shared to social media by People. “Y’all are used to those Nashville guests, but not those Oscar-winning Hollywood guests.”
The trio—Holly, Chris and Gwyneth—then sang Holly’s 2013 songs “Drinkin’” and “Waiting on June,” the latter of which the country music star explained is about her maternal grandparents, who were farmers in Louisiana.
After the Shakespeare in Love actress’ performance, Holly joked to the crowd, “Can you believe it? Isn't it annoying when they can just do everything and they just walk out looking all like that, right? Looking real good.”
The granddaughter of Hank Williams also explained she’s known Gwyneth for years, initially falling in love with the Shakespeare in Love singer’s “secret voice.”
“We became friends four or five years ago and did a summer beach trip together where she had these chalk boards with the kids’ names and this point system,” Holly told People in 2020. “It’s a genius idea that I hope to try. I’m lucky to have great girlfriends like Gwyneth and other women who are patient with their children—and I was lucky to have a patient and loving mom. That’s all been great for me.”
Meanwhile, Gwyneth has been candid about her love for Holly’s work, even using the “Railroads” singer’s music as inspiration when she acted in the 2010 film Country Strong.
“Holly Williams' record, I love,” Gwyneth gushed to The Boot in 2010. “I like that sort of older style, soulful country. When you can hear the pain in the woman's voice, those are the women that I really connected with."
But don’t expect Gwyneth to trade a camera for a microphone any time soon.
“One of the things that was hardest for me to wrap my head around was the idea of performing in front of people, because it's not what I do,” she admitted, adding, “It's pretty scary to sing in front of people.”
