Jahlani Tavai's family is mourning a tremendous loss.
The New England Patriots linebacker's wife Kalei Mau shared that she experienced a stillbirth six months into her pregnancy while in a medically-induced coma for six days.
"We were expecting to welcome her into our Ohana in March 2026," the swimsuit model wrote in text over photos from her hospitalization in her Dec. 10 Instagram post. "But I got an extremely rare blood infection, and on November 20, I was placed in a medically induced coma after I was found unresponsive in my bed."
"Unfortunately, with my organs failing and the sickness infecting my placenta, our baby passed away in my womb," Kalei—who shares 13-month-old daughter Honua Tavai with the NFL player—continued. "Hours later, my body went into natural labor and Jahlani watched me deliver our baby unconscious."
The 29-year-old revealed that she and Jahlani were planning to name her Ka ua Tavai, which means "the rain" in Olelo O Hawai'i. As she noted, "with Ka ua, everything grows."
When she and Jahlani said goodbye to their baby girl, Kalei recalled what she felt was a sign from Ka ua.
"The day after I got out of the hospital, I got to kiss my daughter for the first and last time," she wrote. "She was perfect to me. It was so hard to leave her. But when I walked outside, it started to rain and it brought me joy to know she'll always be with me."
And as Kalei continues to heal at home, she detailed her reflections following the devastating experience.
"I am so grateful for my life and my purpose is now more clear than ever," she captioned the post. "Been to heaven and back to love on my loved ones a little longer and to live for God and my baby angel Ka ua Tavai."
She also expressed gratitude for the support she received from their medical professionals, loved ones and Jahlani's team.
"Thank you for all the prayers & Aloha," she continued. "Thank you to my New England Patriots family for supporting us every way you could. This is such a special team I'm honored to be a part of. Thank you to my Ohana for staying hopeful, having faith, being strong for me, & never leaving my side."
