Barry Manilow is embarking on a health journey.
The “Mandy” singer shared that he has been diagnosed with an early stage of lung cancer following a battle with bronchitis earlier this year.
“My wonderful doctor ordered an MRI just to make sure everything was okay,” Barry, 82, wrote in a Dec. 22 Instagram post. “The MRI discovered a cancerous spot on my left lung that needs to be removed. It’s pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was found so early. That’s the good news.”
However, the Grammy winner admitted that his cancer diagnosis will affect his upcoming shows.
“The bad news is that now that the Christmas is a Gift of Love concerts are over, I’m going into surgery to have the spot removed,” he continued. “The doctors do not believe it has spread and I’m taking tests to confirm their diagnosis. So, that’s it. No chemo. No radiation. Just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns.”
He noted, however, “that means we have to reschedule the January arena concerts.” And while the new dates will see the ‘70s icon return to the stage by February, he emphasized his disappointment.
“I’m very sorry that you have to change your plans,” he added. “Just like you, we were all looking forward to the January shows and hate having to move everything around.”
Despite his upcoming procedure, Barry maintained a light disposition in his note, noting he was “counting the days” until he could return to the stage.
“Something tells me that February weekend is going to be one big party,” Barry wrote of his first weekend of shows back following the procedure. “I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
He also expressed hope that his followers will take a page out of his book, adding, “Remember, if you have even the slightest symptom, get tested!”
Barry is not the only star who has used their diagnosis to spread awareness. James Van Der Beek—who shared his own stage three colorectal cancer diagnosis last year—recently shared that the illness has been the “best thing that ever happened” to him.
“I had this little voice in my head that said, 'You're going to make changes in your life that you would never, ever make if you didn't have this extreme of a diagnosis,’” James explained during a Dec. 19 appearance on Today. "I don't think I knew what it was to slow down before.”
As he put it, “Really, the biggest change would be this journey of self-love.”
