Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are clearing up details of their latest business move.
As the Duke and Duchess of Sussex restructure their Archewell Foundation—which they founded in 2020—as Archewell Philanthropies, a report in the Daily Mail alleged that three of the organization’s staff members has been let go, with the ex-employees being told their layoffs were “because the charity was closing.”
While a spokesperson for the couple acknowledged that its team was indeed shrinking, they did not specify exactly how many people were affected.
“The move toward a fiscal sponsor operating model does mean that some staff redundancies are inevitable,” the spokesperson told People in a statement published Dec. 22, “particularly with junior admin roles.”
The statement continued, “We will not be discussing these personnel details further, other than to say that we are honored to have worked with incredibly talented and caring people who dedicate themselves to helping others.”
Three days earlier, Harry, 41, and Meghan, 44, detailed the rebranding of their nonprofit, with an announcement on Archewell Philanthropies’ official website saying that the shift would allow them “to broaden their global philanthropic efforts for meaningful reach and maximum impact.”
The website update also included a nod to the pair’s kids Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, hinting at their future involvement in their parents’ work.
“This charitable entity,” the message continued, “allows the couple and their children to expand upon their global philanthropic endeavors as a family.”
Harry and Meghan have certainly been teaching Archie and Lili the importance of helping others. Last month, the youngsters got to perform a good deed as they assisted in preparing meals alongside mom and dad for the Los Angeles community ahead of Thanksgiving.
And the event certainly had a broad impact. According to a press release, the partnership between Archewell and Our Big Kitchen Los Angeles (OBKLA) meant that the packaged meals would “reach local schools, shelters, senior centers, and other community organizations serving our neighbors in need.”
