Dearest gentle reader, it’s time for a rags to riches tale.
The trailer for season four of Bridgerton has officially arrived and promises the most epic love story between Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and the Lady in Silver, Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha).
In the look at the upcoming season, Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan)—who last season was revealed as the brains behind Lady Whistledown—offers Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) a personal breakdown of all the gossip among the ton, including the news that Lady Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell) is eager for Benedict to marry, hoping he might find someone at her masquerade ball.
And find someone he does, as Sophie has her own Cinderella moment, donning a disguise and attending the ball. She and Benedict have an immediate attraction, with the Bridgerton brother calling her, “The most intriguing person I’ve ever met.” But once the clock strikes midnight, Sophie runs away, leaving behind a glove (instead of a shoe)—a clue that Benedict hopes will help him find her.
While the storyline—based on Julia Quinn's third Bridgerton book, An Offer From a Gentleman—does share several similarities with the Cinderella fairytale, showrunner Jess Brownell made sure to confirm that the character of Sophie “is no damsel in distress.”
"She is someone who has chess moves and is always thinking two, three steps ahead,” she told Entertainment Weekly in May. “She’s absolutely going to throw Benedict for a loop."
As for Luke, the 37-year-old cannot wait to bring the story of Sophie and Benedict to the small screen.
“The scripts that Jess and her team have come up with are dynamite,” he shared with Netflix’s Tudum. “They’re really, really, really exciting.”
“The storyline is a bit of a twist on Cinderella,” he added. “You remember being told those stories as a child—the magic and the romance of them. It’s really exciting to have that weaved into the world that we know of Bridgerton.”
And looking at the relationship between Sophie and Benedict this season, Luke noted that “it’s the struggle between a proper old-school fairy tale—the romance of it—and the actual reality of the world.”
“You have to hold both of them—the romance and the reality—in your hand,” he continued. “In its best version, ‘true love’ happens in the middle of that.”
Yerin was also thrilled about the chance to embody Sophie, especially as the character has so much she’s trying to overcome.
“What drew me to Sophie was that she immediately has obstacles,” she told Tudum. “Whether it’s this battle around social status or trying to hide her feelings from Benedict.”
Season four of Bridgerton will be released on Netflix in two parts, with the first half premiering on Jan. 29 and the second half arriving on Feb. 26.
