Patrick Ball quite literally spent his whole life preparing for his role on The Pitt.
Indeed, Patrick, who plays Dr. Frank Langdon opposite Noah Wyle in the medical drama, admitted that his family has a very personal connection to not only the medical field, but shows including Noah and showrunner John Wells.
“I grew up watching Noah Wyle on TV,” Patrick explained to E! News Justin Sylvester on the red carpet for the Critics Choice Awards 2026 outside Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif. Jan 4. "We grew up watching ER in my household. My mom is an ER nurse, my dad is a paramedic so we would sit down and watch that show every week. We would watch that and we’d watch The West Wing."
The 36-year-old—who is nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series alongside Billy Crudup, Ato Essandoh, Wood Harris, Tom Pelphrey and Tramell Tillman—emphasized that it feels like a full circle moment to be at the Critics Choice Awards, which are set to air live on E! and USA Networks and will be hosted by Chelsea Handler.
“It’s really crazy,” he continued. “The fact that we watched that and I get to work with John Wells who made both of those shows on my first TV show—you couldn’t write it."
As Patrick is up for a nomination alongside Noah as well as fellow costar Katherine LaNasa, he reflected on what a whirlwind it has been for him.
The last year and a half has been a roller coaster that I don’t think any of us had seen coming,” he continued. “It’s my first time on TV. Eighteen months ago I was in Brooklyn working three jobs."
Before landing the life-changing role, Patrick admitted he was considering “moving back to North Carolina.”
“The fact that I got pulled on to this show at age 35,” he added, “I thought I had missed the boat so that I’m standing here at the Critics Choice Awards is just crazy.”
