VineKanye West was caught in the act—the act of smiling, that is!
Indeed, Kim Kardashian's hubby flashed those pearly whites Sunday at a Chicago Bulls game. This grin was short-lived, though, because the second Yeezus realized he was on camera, he shifted back to his serious, stoic self! Gustavo Vega captured Kanye's instantaneous smile-to-scowl transition in a comical Vine clip, and not surprisingly, it went viral just as quickly as Kanye's smile disappeared!
So why is it that 'Ye doesn't want to look happy? He explained earlier this year at The Daily Front Row's inaugural Fashion Los Angeles Awards, saying, "Back when I was working on Yeezus, I saw this book from the 1800s and it was velvet-covered with brass and everything...I looked at all these people's photos and they look so real and their outfits were incredible and they weren't smiling and people, you know the paparazzi, always come up to me, ‘Why you not smiling?' and I think, not smiling makes me smile...When you see paintings in an old castle, people are not smiling cause it just wouldn't look as cool."
Interesting. He's not the only one with the anti-smile mentality—Kim's not a fan of cheesin' either, but for different reasons! North West's mama Instagrammed a rare photo of her grinning earlier this year. "See I do smile..." she wrote. "[I] even laugh on occasion. Not too often though because it causes wrinkles."
Fair enough. It should be noted, though, that Kim was bearing a grin (and much more) in most of her iconic Paper magazine pictures! Her man loved that smiley spread, too, tweeting one of the images approvingly with the hashtag #ALLDAY.
So smiling is OK in the Kimye world, but perhaps anything other than a slight smirk should be saved for a special occasion.
