Miley began and ended 2013 on the cover of Cosmopolitan. The covers were both beautiful, but the interviews were very different. In the beginning of the year, she gushed about her fiancé Liam Hemsworth. In Decemeber, she was talking about how she wasn't going to sit around and cry over their breakup.
New Music Direction
Miley showed us that her Disney tunes and sweet Hannah Montana persona were very much behind her when she released the edgy and catchy single "We Can't Stop" from her new album Bangerz. But nothing prepared us for the wacky, wild and sexy video that she debuted for the song.
Selfies, Selfies, Selfies
Miley may have had a busy 2013, but she always had time to take a selfie. She snapped so many pics of herself, we even made an entire photo gallery in honor of her Instagram shots and Twitpics.
End of an Engagement
After an almost four-year courtship, Miley and Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth broke off their engagement and parted ways. A source told us that it was Miley's decision to break up "after coming to grips with Liam being what she believed was less than faithful to her."
Bangerz
After much promotion and hype, Miley released her new album Bangerz and the critics loved Miley's new sound. It featured collaborations with Britney Spears, Nelly and more. Bangerz debuted at number one on on both iTunes and Billboard, making Miley's quest to reinvent herself officially a success.
Twerkgate
In one of the biggest stories of 2013, Miley Cyrus' caused dropped jaws and raised eyebrows around the world when she followed a tongue-wagging performance of "We Can't Stop" at the MTV Video Music with a twerk-filled "Blurred Lines" duet with Robin Thicke. There was grinding, a giant foam finger and the rest is music, pop culture and Internet history. We will never hear the word "twerk" ever again without thinking of this moment.
No Clothes, No Problem
Miley was never shy about showing off her hot bod, but in 2013 she took her love of getting naked to a whole new level. From nearly nude selfies to risqué photo shoots, Miley's skin was always on display.
Red Carpet Rockin'
You couldn't swing a camera at an event without hitting Miley, and she surprised us each time she stepped onto the red carpet. Sometimes she was outragerous, sometimes she was sexy and sometimes she kept it simple. But she always made fashion in 2013 interesting!
Saturday Night Live
Miley hosted the Oct. 5 episode of Saturday Night Live and acted as musical guest. Besides a monologue that poked fun at herself and her VMA performance, highlights included her parody of the government shutdown titled "We Can Stop" and her portrayal of a sexified Michele Bachmann.
She Wrecked Us
Miley shocked us yet again (and broke her own Vevo record) when she released her "Wrecking Ball" video that featured her riding a giant wrecking ball in nothing but some red lipstick.
Cry, Cry Again
Fresh off announcing her breakup with Liam, Miley delivered two emotional performances of "Wrecking Ball" in less than a month. One was at the American Music Awards (which came with a giant crying cat), while the other one was a teary performance iHeartRadio Music Festival.
Miley vs. Sinéad
Because it wouldn't be a Best of 2013 list without a feud! Sinéad O'Connor wrote open letters to Miley, bashing her controversial outfits, warning her about the music industry, etc. Miley responded by comparing her to Amanda Bynes, and the fight went round and round and round…
Lighting Up
After winning the Best Video award at the 2013 MTV EMAs, Miley celebrated by pulling what appeared to be a joint out of her purse and lit it right there onstage.
Rolling Stone
Miley graced the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine (topless, of course) and talked about getting embarrassed in front of Kanye West, the now infamous VMA performance and how she thinks "weed is the best drug on earth."
