Charisma Carpenter, Angel
Charisma Carpenter allegedly hid her pregnancy until the last minute, forcing Joss Whedon and the other writers to do a last minute rewrite for season four, resulting in a strange plotline in which Cordelia sleeps with Angel's teenage son (who was technically born a few months earlier and then stolen away to grow up in some sort of hell dimension), becomes pregnant, and "gives birth" to an evil being played by Gina Torres. Meanwhile, Cordelia goes into a coma, and only comes back for the 100th episode, in which she dies. It was a low point on the show, for sure.
Kaitlin Olson, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
When Kaitlin Olson was actually pregnant (with co-star/creator Rob McElhenney's child), Sweet Dee was also pregnant. An entire hilarious season six episode was devoted to the gang trying to figure out who the father was. It turned out that Dee was acting as a surrogate mother, and the baby was quickly forgotten about, which is a good thing, if only because Dee would be only slightly less horrible as a mother than Dennis would be as an uncle.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ringer
One twin was pregnant on this twisty drama, but Sarah Michelle Gellar's real life baby bump couldn't be hidden by boxy jackets and big purses forever. Sharp eyes could spot the tell-tale signs of an expecting mommy towards the end of the series.
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
You know you've hit the big time when you announce your pregnancy on The Oprah Winfrey Show. But Tina Fey's alter ego, Liz Lemon—who wore a lot of big coats this season—remains childless. Which is probably a good thing.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Seinfeld
Julia Louis-Dreyfus spent all of season three pregnant, and they tried to cover it up with boxes and other props. When she got pregnant again during season eight, they sort of gave up, and Elaine was just a little heavier, but no mention of her weight as ever made.
January Jones, Mad Men
January Jones' pregnancy resulted in the beauty that was Fat Betty during Mad Men's season five. Being thin and beautiful and model-esque was always a an important part of Betty's character (to Betty, at least) so the weight gain produced some interesting storylines.
Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock
For obvious reasons (i.e., Jenna is crazy), the 30 Rock team decided not to work Jane Krakowski's pregnancy into the show's storyline. Instead, they pulled some great cover-ups out of their bag of tricks, including a giant dog suit.
Jenna Fischer, The Office
Though Jim and Pam already had a bundle of joy, when Jenna Fischer revealed she was expecting her first child, the gang at The Office decided to throw a curveball into their favorite lovebirds' lives.
Jane Leeves, Frasier
When Jane Leeves got pregnant during season eight, the writers took advantage of the fact that they had made fun of Daphne's weight before, and just made her full-on fat, claiming a binge-eating as the cause. Daphne's absence during Leeves' maternity leave was explained by her attending fat camp. At the very least, Niles' somewhat obsessive love for her wasn't shaken by her weight gain, as he didn't even notice until someone else pointed it out.
Phylicia Rashad, The Cosby Show
During Phylicia Rashad's pregnancy throughout much of season three, she was sort of a floating head, only appearing on screen while sitting at a desk or table, standing behind furniture, or under blankets with a "bad back." She also went on a lot of business trips.
Emily Deschanel, Bones
When Deschanel announced her pregnancy, Hart Hanson and co. decided to just get Bones pregnant. After barely a glimmer of a leading-up-to-sex scene after six long seasons of waiting for a hook-up, Dr. Brennan told Booth they were going to have a baby. The season seven premiere skipped ahead six months to keep up with the real-life baby bump but depriving us of half the fun.
Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation
The second baby on board for the actress (shown here at the Worldwide Orphans Foundation Benefit Reception at the Viceroy Santa Monica) and funny hubby Will Arnett did not affect the shooting schedule or storyline of perpetually single Leslie Knope. (As if pregnancy could slow down this maverick mama.)
Ellen Pompeo & Chyler Leigh: Grey's Anatomy
Both actresses easily shielded their real-life pregnancies behind scrubs and doctor's lab coats.
Cobie Smulders: How I Met Your Mother
The comedy's writers went all out in concealing its stars' simultaneous, unscripted pregnancies. Robin certainly has some lovely handbags!
Alyson Hannigan: How I Met Your Mother
Lily's more outlandish secret-preggo props included a guitar, a globe, a rack of basketballs...and a giant cooler. But in one episode, the actress bared her pregnant belly—to show how "full" she was after winning a hot-dog eating contest.
Kelly Rutherford: Gossip Girl
TV's leading fashion show expanded its couture handbag budget for the scion of the Manhattan social scene's secretly expanding belly.
Angela Kinsey: The Office
Producers decided not to amp up the scandal of Angela cheating on fiancé Andy by making Dwight a baby daddy, so they used ever-creative means to hide the real Angela's bun in the oven.
Becki Newton, Love Bites
The former Ugly Betty star threw Method acting out the window when she got pregnant after being cast as a virgin in the new NBC series. Instead of increasing the props budget, producers are postponing the show's premiere.
Marcia Cross: Desperate Housewives
The actress's pregnancy with twins presented unique complications for Desperate Housewives producers: When she was finally confined to bed rest, they were forced to film the nonpregnant Bree's scenes at Cross' Santa Monica home.
Sarah Jessica Parker: Sex and the City
Fabulous fashion trendsetter Carrie Bradshaw was limited to flowing frocks and coats when SJP was expecting her son, James Wilkie. In another twist of TV fate, the spirited single gal's pal Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) was also pregnant—on and off the show—that same season.
Rachel Griffiths: Brothers & Sisters
Whew! Sarah Whedon's superdramatic storyline—saving the family business, fighting for custody of her two children and sussing out secret half-siblings—did not include a pregnancy to coincide with the actress's baby on board.
Jenna Elfman & Ashley Jensen: Accidentally on Purpose
It's the greatest of all TV pregnancy ironies: In the new CBS sitcom, pregnant actress Jensen plays the nonpregnant promiscuous BFF of Accidentally on Purpose's knocked-up star, whose baby bump is in fact legit.
