Capes
Before Lupita Nyong'o won over Best Dressed lists with her Ralph Lauren cape gown at the 2014 Golden Globes, Gwyneth Paltrow was chic and a vision in Tom Ford white at the 2012 Oscars. Solange Knowles even wore a Humberto Leon for Kenzo cape number for her wedding portraits. For us regular folk, however, the silhouette can often come off as less high fashion and more capped crusader. Win-win either way, right?
The Nonconformist
Fans had divisive opinions about Keira Knightley's 2015 Golden Globes Chanel dress, but the fashion set tends to support risk-takers and those who go against the usual mermaid-dress grain.
Utilitarian Fabrics
When it comes to comfortable, everyday fabrics, neoprene and latex don't really come to mind. Even so, they sure add structure and dimension to our favorite celebrity ensembles. Case in point: Lupita Nyong'o's high-collared Chanel dress from the 2014 annual Glamour Women of the Year Awards.
Tiny Clutches
Cell, lipstick, keys, headphones, wallet, sunglasses...we depend on more than a few essentials to get us through a normal day. Red carpet-worthy clutches are stunning but totally inefficient...unless you have an assistant hanging around.
Going Braless
Whether it's backless or has a deep, plunging neckline, many gowns require going braless or wearing pasties. Some of us, however, need the added support a bra has to offer. Plus, what happens when it gets cold?
High Slits
Designers are big fans of the high slit—and so are Jennifer Lopez and Angelina Jolie's legs. They ooze sex appeal, but can you imagine wearing a gown with a high slit on a windy day? Flash warning!
Jumpsuits
Emma Stone rocked a sparkly Lanvin number at the 2015 Golden Globes. Portia de Rossi came correct in a blue Zuhair Murad iteration at the 2015 People's Choice Awards. It's safe to say it's the year of the jumpsuit. But let's be honest: Those chic onesies are inconvenient to operate...especially in the restroom.
